'Everything clicked into place' - Brown

UPDATED: A blistering back nine has seen Mount Maunganui golfer Mark Brown write himself into the record books with an incredible 11-under-par 59 many are labelling 'freakish” at the Carrus Open in Tauranga today.

Brown, starting his second round on the 11th, turned at the first tee -1 before storming home with a sublime back-nine of nine under par 26.

With five consecutive birdies followed by an eagle 3 on the par-5 sixth, momentum was well and truly with Brown sinking a further three birdies and a par on his way to an 11-under-par 59.

The final score equals the course record, coming four years after fellow professional Richard Lee fired the same score at Tauranga Golf Club in the same tournament.

Speaking to SunLive after the impressive round, Brown admits it was one of those days where everything clicked into place – something not too frequent in the game of golf.

'Just yesterday I was saying how often you walk off the course potentially leaving a few shots out there. Today was one of those days were everything went right.

'I got off to a pretty slow start and wasn't so good, but I just got on a roll and the front nine gives you a lot of chances.”

Approaching the end of the round the much vaunted 59 began to creep into his mind and rather than sit back and see what happens he took destiny into his own hands.

'It [thinking of the record] made me stay sort of aggressive rather than defend a good score. So it was in the back of my mind to get a few more birdies.”

Lining up his putt on the 10th Brown admits to having the intuition that it was always going to go in.

'It was 13 footer but I kind of had that feeling it was going to go in and it was pretty exciting.

'It was a freakish nine holes certainly. I have had 10 under but that was spread out over a round.”

The extraordinary round is in stark contrast to his opening round of two-under par 68 where Brown was tied 13th with defending champion Josh Geary.

His 13-under now has him with the clubhouse lead, three shots ahead of overnight leader Vikrant Chandra.

But he is not getting too complacent believing -18 is the benchmark to be in with a shot of lifting the title come Sunday afternoon.

'I'm only on 13 in the grand scheme of things so I need to keep the foot down.”

New Zealand Golf media manager Peter Thornton, scouring the record books, believes it is the lowest back nine ever carded by a Kiwi.

'It's the lowest nine in tournament history for this event. In terms of world history some others have done it on the PGA tour before.

'It's amazing what he's done. It's a freakish round of golf really.”

Other golfers are midway through their second round, but Thornton predicts Brown will be in the lead come the end of play.
