Bitten by the multisport bug

Tauranga's Anna Barrett got infected with the multisport bug at last year's Motu Challenge and so far has found no cure.

Some multisport experts say that completing the big daddy of New Zealand multisport the Speights Coast to Coast will ease the affliction; Barrett does have the coast to coast in her long term plan but is determined to tick off another Motu Challenge before heading to the South Island event.

Barrett is in great shape heading into this year's event on October 11 having recently won Monty's Revenge multisport race, completing two ultra-marathons and the New York marathon.

After so much running, she is enjoying adding the extra disciplines of cycling and kayaking in her training schedule.

Barrett admits she is not overly competitive and participates for the fun of it.

'I do these events for the personal thrill of completion, the moment I'm not having fun or I don't want to go out training I'll not go, because what's the point?.

'I used to do a bit of snow ski racing at school, I had been skiing all my life and then started competing so was training in the worst weather and down boring runs.

'This sucked the life out of skiing for me so now I make sure to never make training or competing a chore. My motivation to enter the Motu and events like it is purely for the crazy fun of it.”

It took Barrett 10 hours to complete the 65km mountain bike, 20km run, 60km road cycles 27 kilometre kayak event last year.

To make the endurance test even tougher the event is renowned for cold windy weather. Last year Barrett got blown out of her kayak towards the end of the kayak stage.

This is the sort of challenge Anna loves.

Come October 11, Barrett will be on the start line in Opotiki for the North Island's toughest endurance event.
