Papamoa claims IRB World crown

Final words of wisdom via social media from a Papamoa Surf Life Saving coach back in New Zealand have helped the club claim the Open World IRB crown on the other side of the world.

Overnight in the Interclub competition, Papamoa's 13-strong IRB team stood atop the podium in the global event finishing ahead of Kurrawa, Australia in second and Denmark third.

The interclub competition is part five separate competitions making up Rescue 2014 –World National Team Championships, World Interclub Championships, World Masters Championships, World Surf Boat Championships, and World Inflatable Rescue Boat Championships.

'It's absolutely fantastic and I don't think any of us had any expectations at all,” says Papamoa Surf Life Saving IRB coach Justin Martin.

'It was all very much unknown because there were different rules and different set up of the boats and motors [compared to NZ rules].”

During the championships five silver medals were won overall; one going to twins Chad and Kurbie Wheeler in the mass rescue, one to Nathan Smith and Mitch Brady in the single rescue along with Meg Fisher and Steph Botting in the women's single.

The men's and women's teams also won silver each with the women also grabbing a bronze in the women's mass.

Justin, who didn't travel with the team due to work commitments, says it is rewarding for months of preparation, including winning the national championships, in what he believes is the club's first appearance on the world stage for IRBs.

And it is his wise words of wisdom that are being credited to helping the side secure the tile, with a post on the Papamoa Surf Life Saving page stating he told the side to not over complicate things.

'Yeah there was a lot of communication through the likes of Facebook and stuff, it's the only easy way.

'I wasn't there to be able to help with the technical bits but it was about getting their heads in the right place.”

Despite being on the other side of the world, compared to his team Justin was keeping close tabs on the results – waking up this morning to the golden result.

'I woke up early to go to work about 5am and saw it straight away then so I was absolutely rapt.

'I have had a lot of messages and phone calls since, so it's been real cool.”
