Sinking catamaran cause sought

The owner of a partly sunken catamaran moored at Pilot Bay is this morning awaiting the chance to properly inspect the damage – and find out what went wrong.

Paul Hollingshead's 30 foot boat was swamped during the weekend's wet and windy weather, but Paul suspects foul play could be involved.

The partially sunken catamaran at Pilot Bay today.

He received a phone call about 12pm on Sunday alerting him the boat was sinking.

Paul sped to Pilot Bay, but strong westerly winds prevented him rowing out to the boat, which is moored about 200 metres offshore.

The catamaran can still be seen offshore today, and is going to be brought ashore on the high tide about lunchtime today.

Then Paul will get his first chance to properly inspect the damage.

'One of the hulls itself has twisted. I don't know exactly what happened till I get it out of the water,” he says.

'I have a feeling somebody's doing some vandalising to it.

'It was a sail boat. One of the stainless steel cables that held the main mast up had a clean cut through it. When you get a clean cut on a cable, it hasn't just broken.”

The salvage plan is to beach the aluminium-hulled, uninsured boat either at Salisbury wharf, or at the other end of the bay near the boat ramp, says Paul.
