No charges following armed incident

No charges have been laid after armed police swarmed a rural property near Puriri yesterday after reports of shots being fired at the property.

Large numbers of Eastern Waikato Police, the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad, police negotiators and the Auckland based Police Eagle helicopter were all involved in the response to the incident.

Armed police were involved in yesterday's incident.

Thames-Coromandel CIB acting Senior Sergeant Martyn Hughes says initial reports were that a firearm was pointed at a neighbour after a person went outside to investigate the noise of several shots.

Martyn says police have interviewed four people from two neighbouring Neavesville Valley properties but no one has been charged.

'Whilst the investigation is on-going, it is unlikely anyone will face charges. Police will be engaging other agencies to work through some issues with those concerned.

'While police support the safe, lawful use of firearms, situations like the one that occurred yesterday demonstrate just how resource intensive and time consuming incidents can be, when things go astray.”

At the end of the day the message from police remains, 'if you see something do something and that is call 111 however, at the same time, if you find yourself in a tense or stressful situation, back away, seek help and avoid confrontation”.
