Bridge death to air on TV

The death of a Tauranga man who died when his work van crashed off Maungatapu Bridge in August last year will feature on TVNZ's Sunday programme tonight.

Electrician and young father Greg Woledge was killed when Tauranga man Iain Crisp was driving a Mitsubishi towards Mount Maunganui when he crossed the centreline hitting the electrical van driven by Greg about 6.10pm on August 12.

Greg Woledge died after his van crashed off the Maungatapu Bridge on August 12 last year.

The AMP'T Electrical van ploughed through the railing and fell five metres into water at Rangataua Bay.

Ashley Donkersley, who was a passenger in the van, managed to escape the submerged vehicle and was rescued by Constable Deane O'Connor, who had stripped to his underwear and dived into the freezing water to rescue him. Ashley and Deane were suffering from hypothermia when they reached the shore.

Greg was trapped in the driver's side of the van and was unable to be rescued.

His body remained in the van and was recovered on August 13 when the vehicle was pulled from the water.

In April this year, Crisp was sentenced to 250 hours community work and ordered to pay $49,999 to victims after earlier pleading guilty to careless driving causing death, careless driving causing injury falsifying his logbook as a bus driver, possession of cannabis for supply and possession of cannabis seeds and utensils.

Tonight at 7pm on TV One, Sunday will look at the aspects of the crash and talk with Greg's family.

Watched the programme and although very sad and tragic for the family.Mr Crisp was charged and tried as the as allowed,it could be proved that the uses of cannabis was a factor in the crash, what was of more concern was the verdict being challenged by the media and watching the reporter chase the man down the streets of Tauranga. There was no legal story in the show simply a story based on emotion and the pack mentality approach.
