Large scrub fire in Ohauiti

UPDATED 4.16PM: A large scrub fire in Ohauiti is now out after and has been left in the hands of the Western Bay of Plenty rural fire officer and the property owner.

The fire was initially reported to be 100m by 300m with fears a sout-west wind of about 10-15knots would fan the fire and make it worse.

A reporter at the scene says the fire is now out and the rural fire officer is heading up the hill on a quad bike to investigate it and make sure all is ok.

Northern Fire Commuications shift manager Scott Osmond says Greerton Fire Brigade is working with neighbours in the area to work out the best way to gain access to the fire.

"It basically a large control burn on a property on Ohauiti Road by Mount Misery. we can't get hold of the owner or gain access to the property at the moment.

"Rural fire officer Alan Pearce is making his way to the scene."
