Apata crash victim named

Police have named Peter Curnow of Tauranga as the man who was killed in a three-car crash on State Highway 2 yesterday.

The 78-year-old died after police say a white van travelling from Katikati to Tauranga crossed the centreline crashing into two oncoming cars just after midday Thursday.

Three vehicles were involved in the fatal crash which killed Peter Curnow.

Police say Peter was driver of the Nissan car involved in the crash.

The crash closed the stretch of highway, between Omokoroa and Katikati, for most of the afternoon with motorists diverted via Wainui South Road and Esdaile Road.

A 72-year-old woman, who was the passenger in the vehicle Peter was driving, was taken to Tauranga Hospital where she is reported to be in a stable condition.

A 44-year-old Papamoa woman and an 11-year-old boy travelling in the third vehicle from Tauranga to Katikati also suffered injuries in the crash.

Both were taken to Tauranga Hospital. A hospital spokesperson confirmed the Papamoa woman was discharged yesterday. The boy remains in a stable condition.

The 61-year-old female driver of the white van and her 65-year-old male passenger suffered minor injuries and were not taken to hospital.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the serious crash unit is continuing to investigate.

He is also asking any witnesses, who haven't already spoken with police, to contact him or Senior Constable Aaron Williams at Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

The crash occurred about 300 metres north of Apata Station Road on a section of road with a high crash rate.
