Chase pair to stay in jail

An Auckland pair arrested after a police chase in Maungatapu yesterday will remain behind bars until their next court appearance.

Shane Devon Ngaro, 27, and Te-Ranei Emere Yvonne Newton, 28, appeared in Tauranga District Court today where Judge Peter Rollo remanded them both in custody.

The blue Subaru stationwagon was abandoned at the Maungatapu shops.

Ngaro is charged with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle, theft, reckless driving, driving while disqualified and failing to stop when required.

Newton is jointly charged with Ngaro for theft and unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle. She is also facing an extra charge of shoplifting.

The theft charges relate to $94.40 worth of petrol taken from a BP service station in Rotorua on Sunday. Newton is also accused of stealing three pies from the same shop.

The pair were arrested in Maungatapu yesterday after a police chase from Papamoa in an allegedly stolen Subaru stationwagon, taken from an Auckland address.

The Subaru was then abandoned at the shopping centre on Maungatapu Road where the pair then fled on foot.

Police cordoned off an area of Maungatapu and Newton was soon arrested near the allegedly stolen vehicle, while Ngaro attempted to hide in bush and properties near the Tauranga Harbour edge.

A police dog unit was called in and located Ngaro.

In court today, Judge Rollo declined bail for Newton based on her past offending and that this new alleged offending happened while she was on bail for other shoplifting offences.

She was remanded in custody and will appear in Manukau District Court where she will be sentenced on her other Auckland related shoplifting charges.

It's during this appearance, Newton is expected to enter a plea on the charges stemming from yesterday's incident.

Ngaro didn't apply for bail when he appeared this afternoon and was remanded in custody until Thursday when he is due to appear in Auckland on four charges relating offending in the Auckland area.

Through his lawyer, Jackie Higgins, Ngaro entered an intimated guilty plea on the Bay of Plenty charges, which is expected to be confirmed when he appears in Auckland.
