The man who died in remote Doubtful Sounds yesterday has been named as Neil Richard Turner of Katikati.

Tod says the 61-year-old was on a recreational trip with friends on a private boat in an area only accessible by water or helicopter.

The cause of death is uncertain, but police say they are not treating it as suspicious.

Neil's body was flown to Te Anau by helicopter yesterday and his death has been referred to the Coroner.

Neil, a farmer, was well-known around the Katikati area and was related to the ancestors of Turners Road.
