Richie to meet rugby idol

When Richie Perry grows up he wants to be just like his namesake All Blacks captain Richie McCaw, and if looks are anything to go by, he is well on his way.

Next week the six-year-old will fly to Christchurch to meet his rugby idol as part of a Versatile Homes look-a-like competition.

The nationwide competition ‘Match the McCaw' saw people send in their best Richie face impersonator for the chance to have a training session with Richie and nine of their mates.

The Pillans Point Primary School pupil did not win the competition, but due to the outstanding effort and huge number of votes he received, Versatile Homes are offering to fly him and mum Kirsty to Christchurch next Wednesday.

'It's pretty cool and I'm really excited,” says Richie.

'My friends at school are pretty jealous.”

While in Christchurch for the day, the pair will watch the 127 test veteran film the latest Versatile Homes advertisement and have lunch with him before flying back to Tauranga.

And he already has a number of questions lined up for the All Black, including who his best friend in the national squad is, and how many Weetbix can he eat in one sitting.

Currently playing football, cricket and basketball, Richie says rugby might be on the cards next season and will be asking the All Blacks captain for some basic rugby pointers during the visit.

'I want to play rugby and be an All Black.”

The school and Richie's friends in Class 13 are also getting behind the visit making cards for Richie to take to the bigger version Richie.
