A Mataphi man facing charges of owning a dog which bit a three-year-old on the face has been sentenced to three years and one month jail for assaulting a police officer and drug related charges.

Aaron James Kohu, 41, was sentenced in Tauranga District Court today after earlier pleading guilty to cultivating cannabis, possession of cannabis for supply, selling cannabis, wilfully resisting and assaulting a police officer.

Police undertook a search warrant at Kohu's home after his dog allegedly bit a three-year-old at the Matapihi property.

The charges stem from when police executed a search warrant at Kohu's Matapihi home on April 4.

Police found 750 grams of cannabis, another 100 grams on a sheet of newspaper, scissors, electronic scales, a number of aluminium foil rectangles, and $1653.70 in cash.

In court today, Judge Tony Couch said when police arrived at the property Kohu fled the scene and kept walking when they called for him to stop.

'A police officer caught up with you and tried to stop you and this is when you fell to the ground. The police officer was trying to handcuff you and you punched him in the face.

'You have a considerable history with four convictions of cultivating cannabis in 1989, 1999, 2007 and 2010. You also have several convictions for possession of cannabis and numerous convictions for dishonesty offences.”

Judge Couch said Kohu had earlier denied selling the cannabis but his lawyer David Bates said this can't be accepted.

'The evidence is overwhelming. There was a large volume of cannabis and an organised system of packaging.”

Along with the jail term, Judge Couch made an order for the forfeiture of the cash seized from the property.

Kohu will be back in court this afternoon for a sentence indication hearing on one count of owning a dog that causes injury or death.

He is currently denying the charge.
