Surgery survivor aims for finish line

Most people recovering from a quadruple bypass surgery take the opportunity to enjoy some rest and relaxation.

Not so for Ohope local and father of three, Gary Thomas, who has set his sights on entering the Ohope Express half marathon at Easter weekend.

Before the major heart operation in October last year, Gary was walking for about one hour most mornings.

Immediately after the surgery he could barely walk the length of his deck at home.

When an Ohope Express billboard was erected almost at the end of his driveway, Gary decided it would be the perfect goal on which to set his sights for a return to peak fitness.

The Ohope Express is a new event and entrants can choose to run or walk either the 5km, 10km or half-marathon course.

Described as a competitive but family-friendly event, it will take place on Easter Saturday, April 19, starting at Maraetotara Reserve in Ohope.

There are prizes up for grabs, including $1000 for one lucky 10km or 21.1km entrant.

All proceeds from the 5km event will be donated to the Diabetes and Sport Association (DESA) to raise awareness of the disease and encourage people to achieve an active and healthy lifestyle.

Gary was chosen as an Ohope Express event ambassador because his recovery is an inspiration for those who think they may not be able to achieve a fitness goal.

'Initially I wanted to do the 10km, but now I know I have made such good progress that the half-marathon will be achievable,” says Gary.

'I think my one of my greatest achievements is reflecting on where I am now, compared to where I was five months ago.”

Gary certainly won't be alone on the course, as daughter Liz has also entered the half marathon.

While Liz is running and Gary is walking the course, the dynamic duo are both thrilled to be entering the event together and consider it a great opportunity for some father/daughter bonding.

'We'll talk to each other most days with a training update,” says Liz.

'It's a special thing to be able to do with Dad; six months ago he was barely able to stand up so I'm really proud of how far he's come.”
