Dismay at pool hour plan

Users of Tauranga's Memorial Pool are making a big splash about Tauranga City Council's pitch to shut the community facility for nine months of the year.

In its 2014-2015 draft Annual Plan, TCC is proposing to reduce the pool's season by eight weeks, tighten opening hours, and increase adult entry fees by 20cents – to the dismay of regular swimmer Mary Parker.

'I'm feeling pretty upset about it.

'They're catering more to the tourists than to Tauranga residents and I believe they should actually increase the opening to nine months of the year. There is no other open-air pool in Tauranga, other than the Polytechnic.”

Mary uses the pools at Memorial Park for fitness three-four times weekly, and is shocked to see the council's plans for the pool in the draft plan, released for public consultation last month.

The plan proposes a rate rise of 6.7 per cent, comprising of two per cent general rates and a special 4.7 per cent levy to go towards stormwater.

Council is proposing reducing service levels and/or increasing user fees for pools and indoor recreation facilities to help minimise the rates rise.

In the plan Memorial Pool's season will reduce from Labour weekend-April, to early December -late February. During this time the pools could be closed between 10am-2pm and entry will increase to $4.10.

The cuts will save $13,700 annually, which Mary believes isn't enough to warrant the changes.

Tauranga Swimming Club president Sonya Hudson says the reduced season would have a 'huge impact” on the club's summer programme.

'Tauranga Swimming Club is an 82-year-old club that has always had an association with Memorial Pools.”

The programme involves more than 200 swimmers from beginner to competitive levels, and also provides training for waterpolo and triathlons.

'Memorial Pool is our iconic outdoor, centrally-located pool within a beautiful park setting overlooking the Tauranga Harbour – and for the sake of saving a minimum $11,000, cutting the season back is true waste,” says Sonya.

'The council should be promoting facilities like this, not cutting them back.”

Tauranga City councillor Matt Cowley says the draft plan is made up of many $10,000, $20,000 and $40,000 cuts, which all add up.

The plan for community pools is a tricky one, and the current proposal was recommended to TCC by Bay Leisure and Events Limited, says Matt.

'As councillors we based our decision on the recommendation from BLEL, as we asked them what savings could be made.

'The idea is to rationalise the pools into a few really good premier facilities, rather than scattered around town. But of lot of people won't like it, as they would rather have access to their local pool over having structured programmes in premier facilities.”

Matt says discussions are still underway, and the plan will hopefully buy councillors time to have a 'proper look” at Tauranga's aquatic facilities.

'It was purely around cost savings initiative, as we move into the 10-year plan.”

The plan also proposes Otumoetai Pool is vested to the swimming club, potentially saving $300,000 to TCC rates funding.

Its a long way to have a swim at the mount if you live the other side of town. Its crazy, what a waste of a beautiful pool. To make more money, let the pool out to schools during the mornings. There are swimming programs offered, eg TOCS ( Teach Our Children to Swim) a not for profit organization that could utilize the pool.

Big ticket wastage

Tauranga City councillor Matt Cowley says the draft plan is made up of many $10,000, $20,000 and $40,000 cuts, which all add up. ... The do indeed add up, add up to a rort, smoke and mirrors. Trying to create the impression you're being responsible when in fact most irresponsible. Drowning's on the increase and they put prices up and reduce access to our pools? At the same time add these up; $5.4million on the boat haul out facility, $4m overspent on staff, $millions destroying Phoenix car park to replace with grass, hundreds of $1000s on events that don't need it! But you pat yourselves on the back letting grass grow longer, terminating the mobile library bus to schools and the transport restricted, give away a pool which will come back and bite ratepayers hard when a major upgrade is needed (unless you've done it), gift the NZTA $140m!

Tauranga City Council Wage Cut?

Posted on 05-04-2014 20:57 | By xfiles

Over the last few weeks I've seen the Tauranga City Council try to increase their revenue (via fines for tyres) and multiple ways to make cuts.. HERE'S AN IDEA... How about we cut your salary?.. I'll take that as a no..How about you take the cut before we cut off our communities!

Better research needed

They shouldn't have built Baywave in the first place.Councillors need to better research . Basing on financial considerations on input from those with a financial agenda ,those that already rip off the council ( and therefore the ratepayers ) is ludicrous. I know the council staff proved that they are incapable of running the pools business, but the real answer is to find competent people , not give the profit away to yet another business or consultant . If council staff are not able to do the job give them the heave ho and employ staff that can...in fact fire the HR clowns and get new ones that can find competent staff to operate all areas of council business.

What a great idea to make the pool available to schools. It is so important that children learn to swim and, who knows, they may want to go back to the pools at the weekends with their families and friends... More revenue?

Greed again!!!

yes greed again!! upping the entrance fee what next? Is the tauranga city council trying to drive the average pool user and their families away by upping the fees!! Maybe drop a couple of councillors, the remaining take a wage cut including the Mayor and deputy?? by doing that which I realise wont happen should compensate for any savings that need to be made. It is hard enough to make ends meet these days with high rates and water charges. MM maybe they intend catering for the tourist who have money to spend??

Total Greed

Come on council don't we pay enough for our rates now, if you go and shorten the season you are effecting so many families who enjoy a affordable activity to take the family and not to mention the flipa ball competition run in term 4 and term 1 and the swimming club which also uses this pool greatly.

Memorial Pools

One of the better pools in Tauranga!!! I can't believe our council are so ignorant of what is happening across NZ. Did they not see reports on the number of NZ children who can't swim, the number of drownings, so instead of being part of the solution the Council want to be part of the problem, that makes sense! NOT. How short sighted is the council, guys you are playing a dangerous game if you don't listen to your ratepayers, look what the ratepayers did at the last elections when they felt they weren't being listened to!
