Sailing away on a Sunday

A trio of boats made the most of calm and peaceful conditions, fronting up to briefing for a day of sailing with the Omokoroa Boat Club.

On Sunday, Konini, Chico Too and Piccaninny set sail from the point 11.15am with a warm autumn sun and a light easterly breeze.

Omokoroa Boat Club makes the most of calm conditions.

Omokoroa Boat Club co-ordinator John Budden says with no apparent wind, the boats agreed to motor down to Rangiwae Point and then sail or drift home via the Motuhoa Passage.

'Everyone woke up and before long Chico Too and Piccaninny had broken out the gennaker and spinnaker, leaving Konini to make her stately way home under a very large Genoa,” says John.

'Single-handed Greg on Chico had his work cut out as Piccaninny, under the control of the big red and white kite controlled by Alan Roberts and Peter Gibbs, romped home only to find no wind behind Motuhoa and Chico caught up.”

John says as the boats cleared the island, Chico found a great breeze and Piccaninny, having admired the real estate, was forced to chase the keeler home.

Chico made the line only seconds ahead of the trailer yacht, with Konini romping home third.

'A visit to Mount Maunganui saw the Matakana Bank breaking nearly all the way to Karewa, lucky we were not out there.”
