Superbikes battle the streets

An oil spill on the track has seen organisers cancel The Paeroa Battle of The Streets today.

SunLive photographer Bruce Barnard captured some of the action at the Paeroa Battle of The Streets on Sunday.

A SunLive reporter at the scene says the races have been cancelled due to an oil spill which seems to have been spread over most of the track.

He says a public address announcement said a sidecar dumped 4.5 litres of sump oil on the track.

"Senior riders and officials called it off after attempting to fix problems with cement dust. They deemed it insufficient and thus too dangerous."

Earlier report:

A number of Tauranga riders are contesting the Paeroa Battle of The Streets today in perfect conditions – for spectators.

For riders in full racing leathers the only relief from the heat is when they are on the track.

Gordie McKeown and swinger Tina McKeown are racing in the Post Classic Sidecars for the first time.

"We're taking it easy," says Geordie.

John Blaymires from Te Puke is also listed in the Post Classic Sidecars, but wasn't on the grid at practice.

Gordie McKeown and swinger Tina McKeown are racing in the Post Classic Sidecars for the first time.

Rhys Holmes, Katikati, is racing a BMW 1000RR in both the Bears (British European American) and the Formula Paeroa headline event.

Tauranga rider Phil Clarke is riding a Suzuki GS1000 in the Pre '82 event, competing against fellow Tauranga rider Sheldon Reynolds riding a Honda CB900.

Duncan Hart from Tauranga is the only Bay of Plenty rider in the Supermotard class.

One person not racing in this year's battle of the streets is last year's winner Patric Nussbaum and his Black Pearl Kawasaki ZX10.

Patric is the first winner in the history of the Battle of The Streets to be given a life ban after celebrating his 2013 win with a wheel stand on the run to the line.

His supporters are campaigning to have the decision overturned, seeking likes on the Patric Nussbaum Facebook page, saying the decision is harsh, unfair and completely unnecessary.

His supporters have a tent at the end of the back straight on the embankment, and there are T-shirts.

Great day of racing. It was a shame to call it off early, but we still saw every class of racing. What a day.
