Baypark out in Chiefs reshuffle

The chief executive of Bay of Plenty Rugby believes Tauranga will continue to be overlooked for Super Rugby games until the option of an international class venue is explored.

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union chief executive Mike Rogers made the comments to SunLive after it was this week revealed the Chiefs will no longer venture to ASB Baypark due to a new seven year franchise licence.

Baypark will not host any Super Rugby matches next season.

The new Chiefs Rugby Club Limited Partnership licence, granted this week by New Zealand Rugby, will operate until 2020.

It includes the Taranaki Rugby Football Union, which is moving from the Hurricanes to the Chiefs in 2014 and will host two Chiefs matches in Taranaki next season.

As a result Mount Maunganui's ASB Baypark is left in the cold with only Rotorua's International Stadium picking up a pre-season match against the Blues on February 14, 2014, for the Bay region.

'From our point of view any rugby content being played in the region is great. But the venue is a significant barrier at the moment in terms of Tauranga hosting the Chiefs, All Blacks or any top level national or international sporting events,” says Mike.

'It needs to be a venue that stacks up when going against venues around the country like Waikato Stadium.”

He says this will only become possible if there is a strong will from Tauranga City Council and the community to create a venue to support these sporting fixtures.

In the past Baypark has hosted one Super Rugby match per season with the Blues and Brumbies visiting the region in the last two years.

Instead New Plymouth's Yarrow Stadium hosts two Chiefs matches in 2014, against the Blues on May 9 and the Warratahs on May 31. Two matches will be played there in 2015.

Waikato Stadium will continue to host a minimum of five home matches per year, with six Super Rugby matches allocated in 2014. Match allocation beyond 2015 will be made on a year-by-year basis.

Mike says the rugby union has no involvement in deciding where games are played throughout the season, with all communication going between the Chiefs franchise and Baypark management - Bay Leisure and Events Limited.

But any Super Rubgy game being played in the region is an added bonus with the Chiefs returning to Rotorua after a number of years away, says Mike.

The Bay, along with the other Chiefs Rugby Club Limited Partnership unions of Counties Manukau, King Country, Taranaki, Thames Valley and Waikato hold 50 per cent of the shares in the Chiefs Rugby Club and private investors from Taranaki, Waikato and elsewhere hold the other half.

The shareholders have invested $3.3million into the new entity.

"We are very pleased the Chiefs can now face the future with renewed confidence and build on the impressive on-field success the franchise has enjoyed of late," says New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew.

"The new arrangement injects fresh thinking and new capital to put the Chiefs on a sound commercial footing. We are also impressed with the calibre of the private investors who have decided to back the team.

"All this augers well for the long term financial well-being of the Chiefs."

Steve says both the NZRU and Chiefs have carefully weighed up the involvement of Taranaki Rugby in this and are mindful of some fans' loyalty to the Hurricanes, as well as some fans' unease in Waikato.

"However, on balance, and supported by fan research, we found this new arrangement would be broadly supported by fans in both regions."

Chiefs' chief executive Andrew Flexman says this is an exciting new era for the Chiefs Rugby Club, and the franchise is privileged to have the backing of a diverse and committed group of investors, who wish to share in the growth of the organisation.

The announcement completes the process begun in December 2011, with licences now awarded to run four of the five Super Rugby franchises.

"Our aim all along was to build a stronger foundation for the professional game in this country, while ensuring it maintained its ability to feed a winning All Blacks team, so we are very pleased with the progress we have made in rolling out the new operating model," says Steve.

Capital investment breakdown:

Provincial Unions: Counties Manukau Rugby Football Union 11.55% Waikato Rugby Union 11.55% Bay of Plenty Rugby Union 11.55% Taranaki Rugby Football Union 11.55% Thames Valley Rugby Football Union 1.9% King Country Rugby Football Union 1.9%

Private Investors: Waikato Syndicate 24.93%

Back in the Old days

The Domain was used for some big games away back in the 1970's and with temporary stands excess of 50,000 attended. It was thought then the domain would be developed into a bigger venue, unfortunately Rotorua developed their International Stadium, and obviously not good enough. Please Tauranga Rugby if you want International Rugby some goals need to be set, do not expect money from TCC as they have none. Use Baypark as local ground and really develop it as speedway come concert area and indoor features. Curious to see what knockers come out of the woodwork.

Bay park

No surprise here, always been issues over the quality of facilities and the ground. Cheap job from the start reflects challenges now. Would have got it all for free in 2020 if wants ... TCC are broke no Chance money from there.

No surprises here

When big business is involved in sport, guess what? Profits come before people's enjoyment. Then those who can afford to travel and pay exorbitant amounts for tickets, become the privileged "few." Those who can't, miss out - again!

Baypark is a disgrace!

I'd support a one-off rates contribution to build a decent stadium somewhere. I don't play rugby but it is our national sport and deserves some love.

Skip the bull...

Dollars, three million of them, this is what has influenced this outcome, NOT the venue. Rotorua's International Stadium is picking up one pre-season match against the Blues. It just about money!

New rugby stadium for Tauranga

This might give thinks in the BOP a hurry up. The speedway venue is crap for watching rugby - everybody knows that. We need a purpose built sports stadium and a stadium on the Domain with underground car parking with access off Takitimu Drive would be perfect. It should also become the home of a national rugby 7's academy. Can we have a bit of vision in here please?

travel and use theirs and pay off our debts and fix the sewers

I would rather see Tauranga set up Chiefs buses and whip over to Rotorua and Hamilton its crazy to build another International stadium with those two so close TCC is already in loads of debt and certainly doesnt need anymore, they should concentrate on our advantages like water sports etc rather than try and outdo other local towns for a big stadium. Its just dumb. Let everybody park at Baypark and bus them over and back and then around for those that cant drive. For the amount of games we would get a year its just not worth it

Baypark speedway

Baypark speedway is an awful venue for rugby as you sit half a mile away from the field. Tauranga is a growing city. It needs an International stadium so we can see the chiefs play and also the All Blacks.

Surprise Surprise!!!

Mr Murray, you and your mates with Mr Town, bought this lemon, it is a Speedway track, and that is all!!!, so stop deflecting blame here, I do not care where a multi purpose sports/concert stadium is built, it could be Whakatane, but the Bay needs something, as it is the only Province without decent facilities, all so why not make it a regional issue, and all and sundry go on about the growth in the "Bay" etc etc, and we even have our own spot on the Weather map, but in reality our sporting facilities are worse than what Ekatahuna has, I am all for it being a Baywide collective Council issue, and all should buy into it as share holders, build it at the TECT park!!!, who cares, but it is not just a Taurangs issue it is a B.O.P one

The council Murray Guy was on

Posted on 13-12-2013 11:24 | By Councillorwatch

passed a $5 million "loan" to Baypark and purchased a Speedway business if I remember correctly? Also a catering business? Just wondering if any councillors were speedway fans? Huge amounts of money while the city floods.

Magnaninmous gesture!

Buddy Mikaere - here's a thought. Why not donate whatever money the iwi gets from the Rena pay-out, towards an international class stadium that you are so keen on?

Another Stuff up

Well well do you think the TCC could ever get anything Wright just to slow and that much red tape they cant even cut there own way out of a wet paper bag.

Missing the Point

Posted on 13-12-2013 14:23 | By Howie Roll

Those of you who are taking this decision by the Chiefs as a chance to put the boot into Baypark are missing the point. We all know it's not ideal, but venues like Invercargill, Whangarei, Nelson and Palmerston North continue to get games while we miss out? Do me a favour. This is all about Hamilton greed and control freakery. I sat at the back of the new stand in Hamilton for the semi, and felt just as far away from the game as I do at Baypark. Same in New Plymouth. We've had games at Baypark for years. Now all of a sudden they tell us it's not up to it? By all means let's explore better options, but we need to realise this decision by the Chiefs is an unmistakable two fingers to fans in the Bay. Why bother to support them?

Dunedin spent $220m plus

on a stadium that has turned into a massive money pit. Even with a similar venue, Tauranga would be lucky to get 2 super games annually, and one b grade international every few years. This is more about Hamilton interests denying Bay of Plenty and Counties venues, than it is Baypark's suitability. If you want to fund a 1/4 billion dollar stadium then don't ask rate payers to contribute.

Rotorua agreement

Posted on 18-12-2013 14:40 | By YOGI BEAR

TCC agree not to build a stadium and so compete with Rotorua, instead Tauranga got Baywave, pools all over the place and some. Either deal is bad as, both a financial nightmare, the huge costs to build and then run these huge facilities is beyond most councils if not all, the usage is minor and so the losses to be paid annually are huge.

Putting two & two together

Posted on 18-12-2013 14:56 | By rolyheihei

Finding out the Real reason why BOP & Counties will not get a Chiefs game is as simple as putting two& two together! Firstly, do a google search to find out who the catering Company is for Waikato Stadium? Answer: Montana Catering. Search the Companies office records and find out who owns Montana Catering? Very interesting that one of the Shareholders has a very important role to play within the Chiefs setup !!!

Second rate Union with stars in their eyes

Posted on 18-12-2013 21:33 | By ROCCO

Good job too as this jackass stadium is what we keenly purchased from BOBO wrong design wrong construction and wrong place. Could convert it solely into a second rate rugby venue at little cost and shunt Speedway up to Tect Park where it should be.Stop the whinging and moaning you people who were 'moonstruck' brought the damn thing and thought it was wonderful at the time when it was always just a piece of s***.Put up with it !!!!

The Dump

is getting pretty full. Baypark is the right shapre too.

Ramp up

Posted on 23-12-2013 15:07 | By YOGI BEAR

Honki, we need a ramp up to be able to get to the top of the stand and then be able to dump off all into it.
