Driver killed in Kaimai crash named

The Tauranga man who died in a fatal crash on the Lower Kaimais at the weekend has been named by police.

Graeme Roy Voyce, 52, died when the Rover MG he was driving crashed on State Highway 29 around 4pm on Saturday.

Tauranga road policing manager, Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says police inquiries are continuing and crash investigators will complete a scene survey and analysis.

Emergency services were called to the scene, between Thorn Road and Poripori Road, around 4pm on Saturday.

Police earlier said the black MG was travelling towards Tauranga carrying two people when it "suddenly crossed the centre line" just past McLaren Falls Road.

It and an oncoming vehicle collided sending the oncoming vehicle down a steep bank.

Police said two other vehicles were also struck by debris.

A 56-year-old and 59-year-old and the 51-year-old wife of the driver who died were also taken to Tauranga Hospital.

The 51-year-old woman is ‘comfortable' in Tauranga Hospital today.

The crash forced police to close a section of SH29 and diversions were put in place around SH36, SH2, McLaren Falls Road while police conducted a scene examination, recovered the vehicles, and cleared the roadway.

Police thank those members of the public who stopped to help at the scene.

Diverted via Rotorua

Given the location of the accident on the Tauranga side of Mclaren Falls Road, can anyone enlighten me as to why all traffic was diverted to Rotorua instead of being allowed to detour via McLaren Falls Road?

not all vehicles can drive up this road hence a bigger one is chosen, those who have local knowledge can drive up another road like that.
