Cannabis protest outside court

Legalise cannabis protestors picketed the courthouse today.

Keen legalise cannabis advocators took to the streets outside Tauranga courthouse today in an effort to promote their message to the legal system.

The group gathered outside the District Court on McLean Street around 10am holding signs pushing for the Government to legalise cannabis.

The peaceful protest coincided with the appearance of one of the protestors – Phylip Terangi - who is appearing in court today charged with possession of cannabis, and possession to supply cannabis.

Legalise cannabis advocator, Blaze, says he is protesting today to support friends that are being penalised due to unfair cannabis laws.

What a bunch of losers. They certainly don't do their ridiculous cause any good at all. Just as well for the rest of us.

no thanks

Anyone here like to fly on an airline that allows pilots to smoke cannabis? How about working at a building site where the crane driver is high ( from cannibas)? If its legal but no employer wants them, then they can live forever on the dole.

I can't believe medical experts that say cannabis destroys brain cells. Look at these fellas - they clearly have fully functioning brains, logical thoughtful arguments and coherent speech. Their employers must be proud.

Really..

This is how you will end up if u abuse Drugs!! lol There are some people that use cannabis 4 medicinal use, but not These turkeys... i might agree if it was strictly prescription only.

the days have gone of pot being regarded as a harmless natural drug it brings on psychosis, schizophrenia, paranoia and obviously reduces productivity and enthusiasm etc he would be better off concentrating on bettering himself and the world than just being happy being a stoner, wonder how he supports himself as mandatory drug-testing for jobs and benefits would cause him some grief

Meaningful

Such sad people. Get something meaningful to protest about such as the negative health and social aspects of drug use....

you people are missing the point

Your shallow opinions on society at large is completley your choice, but who has been offended if the man has done a crime? Of course the media's always going to try their best to give the subject a bad read-up ITS THEIR JOBS TO DO SO YOU HALF-WITTS! Underlying problems are all too much blamed on cannabis while yet an average of 500,000 or so users within New Zealand alone (alot still hiding in the closet, in fear of your prejudice). Alot of these people do in fact work for a living, arent all "dole bludgers" (which is just another one of your derogatory forms of categorizing every single person who has ever applied for the dole, regardless of whether or not their search for work is genuine) people can cope with smoking cannabis better than drinking alcohol (a man made poison) you dont just smoke it, if someone were to take medicinally they might vaporize or ingest it for instance, rules need to be in place at workplaces, sure... but it should be for being inebriated ON THE JOB rather than worrying about what they smoked in the weekend and vice versa... Get a grip Tauranga... it's just a bit of hyped journalism, dont let the media think for you, do your own research if it doesn't hurt you to do so. Thank you

1. Phylip is a medical cannabis user(his disability pre-dates his cannabis use). 2. All respect to Phylip for standing up for himself. Too many Maori (and Pakeha) don't and become a forgotten court statistics. 3. Anyone putting Phylip down should be ashamed, he can't help his disability. I'm proud to help those that need support

But as a reply to Captain Sensible, and his not so sensible comment, what would you rather have, someone fueled on cannabis?, or alcohol?, and why is it that employers, can stop a person working, if they use cannabis during THEIR own leisure time, sleep well, and turn up for work ready to go, but! an employee can turn up for work, tired, hungover, after a weekend drinking bout, but standing!!!pass a drug test, and then become a disaster waiting to happen, why is one legal, and not the other????.

It's all about you

This is a fantastic example for the youth of today who are contemplating smoking cannabis. DONT GO THERE OR END UP LIKE THIS GUY ! The guy is clearly displaying one of the main side effects of cannabis use: Impaired divided attention. His thought process is clouded, disjointed and he believes the absolute nonsense that has been passed to him by lobby organisations such as NORMAL. Cannabis is harmful, Cannabis is now many times stronger than it was in the former years, Cannabis is a "gateway" drug and yes like alcohol Cannabis creates a massive amount of social harm in good old NZ. This argument will never go away, but from my experience Cannabis ruins potential, lives and dreams.

same rule for all

Posted on 12-07-2013 13:31 | By Calm Gully

High risk jobs have the same rule for both drugs AND alcohol. Any job should too, productivity and safety would be improved. Moderation is the hardest thing for most drug and alcohol users. It is common sense but common sense is so misunderstood

You don't need to be a doctor to know that many people have health problem and most of them don't smoke cannabis. Simply scapegoat his problems as 'the effects of cannabis' is irresponsible, and lying to youth is worse. Question: Do you support the black market that's selling cannabis to youth? Think about it. Black market dealer's don't usually care about selling to underages (many dealers are underage themselves and sell to young friends). Wouldn't it be a better idea to have legal, regulated, licences premises who are required to ID customers? I'd rather that than see the gangs make millions of dollars selling cannabis to youth

Seems you are arguing about the same thing, booze, hung over and cannabis are all the same thing except for one difference. Booze is legal and cannabis is not, for now that is how it is. Employers can test for booze of course and if under the influence then they can be suspended or fire to. So I can not see the difference in what you are saying as in reality the rules are the same for both as far as a work place matter is concerned.

Thanks for giving this some logical thought, but they're not the same, cannabis test don't test whether the employee is stoned at the time, they test whether the employee has smoked in the last 30 days.

Under the influence

Posted on 20-07-2013 10:35 | By The Master

Cannibis can remain in the human body for a long time, human hair for example reads like rings in a tree, if you have long hair then maybe 6 months worth of history is there. Anyway the game is simple here if the test for cannibis is positive then they are a "Goneburger". If under the influence then little chance to have a safe work place, why take the chance with someone else's life?

Yes excess of cannabis is bad for your health... but so is an excess of food. So is an excess of sun, so is excess of vitamins.. How ever in small doses they are proven beneficial for your health. I know people who have become dependant on cannabis, but I know more people who have become dependant on cigarettes, alcohol and food. I also know a lot of people who smoke cannabis and it has not interfered with their life or their ability to become VERY successful and VERY intelligent (Phd's in science etc)

That is a selective commentary there, truth is that cannabis inhibits the brain cells and operation thereof, this clearly affects body function and various interlectual functions, the effects are different from one person to another. You say some are able to use with no effect ... well do you want a pilot at the wheel who has been puffing up large on whacky weed for a week before getting a hand on the wheel? I am sure you can see the wee flaw in the angle you are taking here, it is obvious isn't it.
