Easter fun in Te Puna

A Te Puna business is taking people back to the basics by teaching them how to make chutneys and jams while letting children take part in an Easter egg hunt.

Grower Direct is holding a series of events over the next three days, with children hunting for Easter eggs and people enjoying a sausage with homemade chilli sauce or chutney today.

Owner Paul Nielsen wanted to do something besides a sausage sizzles where people go to a place and get given a bit of dry bread and a bit of sauce.

'We all make different chillies and chutneys so we started letting people try them. I tend to focus more on hot chilli jams and chilli dips, my mother is really good with chutneys, one of the other guys makes beautiful and really unusual chutneys.

'We can't sell the sauces because there are a lot of rules around it so we thought we would teach people how to make it.

'It's just fun, if people are successful in what they do then they will keep buying.”

He predicts they will get through 400-500 sausages today and says they have already gone through their 500 Easter eggs.

'Tomorrow we are going to invite them all back to see how we make our chillies and chutneys.

'We're setting up an outdoor interactive kitchen, so two of us are hosting that.”

On Monday the Grower Direct team will launch its Kids Club giving children the chance to learn how to grown their own plants.

'We're starting off with lessons on how to sow vegetables.

'The whole lot is all free, it's just a bit of a fun weekend.
