Rena open days begin

The first of two Rena open days was at Baycourt Theatre Tuesday, with the second on Saturday at Papamoa.

They are the opportunity for the public to give feedback on the issues and options facing the owners and insurers, the main one being - what to do with the wreck?

Insurers the Swedish Club senior claims manager John Owen says a decision has not yet been made on what to do with the remainder of the Rena and this is an opportunity for the Tauranga community to have their say.

'Though we have gathered much information about the effects of options for dealing with the wreck, we have not yet made a decision on a preferred option,” says John.

The information obtained so far about the wreck, its location and future prospects will be on display at Baycourt theatre from 4pm till 7pm.

The second open day will be on Saturday at the Papamoa Sport and Recreation Centre from 11am until 4pm.

The preliminary studies compare the effects of carrying out the complete removal of the wreck with two alternatives; leave it as is after the Resolve salvors' contract is completed; and or remove the cargo and make it safe.

Dive surveys to determine what cargo and other contaminants remain in the stern section are still underway.

John says if potentially harmful cargo still remains in the stern section leaving the wreck as is would not be appropriate.

Complete removal of the wreck is expected to take about five years and is considered technically challenging, dangerous to undertake, and damaging to the environment.

The time to remove potential contaminants and make the wreck safe is expected to be about three years.

The owners and insurers are currently working towards the complete removal of the wreck to the extent that it is safe and practical. The information coming out now is that complete removal of the wreck is neither safe nor practical.

To leave the remains of the wreck on the reef the owners would need to apply, and have granted, resource consent from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.
