V8-powered Super Saloons in the spotlight

Super Saloon car competition will heat up at Baypark Speedway as the track prepares to host the 2024-25 New Zealand Championship next summer.

The third and final of Baypark Speedway’s $5000-to-win showcase events this Easter Saturday also offers an early preview to one of the headline events of next summer.

Recently Baypark Speedway was awarded hosting rights to the 2024-25 New Zealand Super Saloon Car Championship.

This weekends penultimate meeting of the season puts the V8-powered Super Saloons in the spotlight with an impressive 21-car entry for the Bay Super Sundown 30-lapper as a curtain raiser for next season’s national title.

It’s also the third Baypark feature race offering a $5000 winners payout this summer with Michael Pickens cashing both cheques for the Midget Car and Sprint Car events, says a statement released on behalf of Baypark Speedway.

The Super Sundown line-up is headed by back-to-back NZ champion Chris Cowling (Tauranga) along with former champs Sam Waddell, Steve Cowling and Brent Emerson (all Baypark) and Napier’s Steve Flynn.

"Baypark racers Scott Hayward and Damian Orr will be strong contenders for home track success this weekend while the visitors in the high quality field include Wellington’s Mark Pitcher and Matt Eckersley, Hawke’s Bay racers Grant Flynn, Jason Long, Chace Rodda, and Jeremy Browne, Palmerston North’s Peter Bengston and Joe Ingram plus Christchurch contracted Craig Cardwell and Auckland’s Ben Harding.

"The other Easter weekend classes provide plenty of variety with open wheel action from the F2 Midgets, full contact competition from the Stock Cars and the oval track stars of tomorrow on track in the Youth Mini Stocks.

"And the fast-paced action is finished off with the mayhem and hilarity of the annual Metalman Recyclers Demolition Derby and Ramp Race.

"Also, as a preview to another upcoming Baypark motorsport event top local drifters Sam West and Clayton Dalley will have their cars on display in the Fan Zone and in demo action ahead of the D1NZ National Drifting Championship round event at Baypark in May."

Racing starts at 6.30pm.
