One person has received serious injuries following a two-vehicle crash that closed State Highway 2 near Bethlehem on Saturday night.

"Police responded to reports of a two vehicle crash on State Highway 2, Bethlehem, near the Wairoa River Bridge, at 10.58pm," says a police spokesperson.

One person has received serious injuries, and the road was closed until around midnight.

An alternative route for traffic was put in place, with eastbound traffic directed to turn right onto Wairoa Rd, left onto SH29 and right back onto SH2. Westbound traffic was directed to travel in the reverse direction. This detour was not suitable for heavy vehicles.

The road has now reopened.
