Thousands walk for breast cancer

A sea of pink filled the streets of Tauranga last night as people took part in the 10th annual ASB Breast Cancer Fun Walk.

Between 3000 – 4000 people turned out for the 4.5km walk through Tauranga's CBD to raise funds for the Tauranga Breast Cancer Support Service.

Geniver Martin, 16, and Morgan Whitaker, 16, dressed in pink.

Event organiser Iris Thomas says it was a great turnout considering they had only received 1000 entries by the day of the event.

'It was probably the most exciting one so far.

'Up until yesterday there were barely 1000 entries then they all turned up at the last minute.”

Iris says it is too soon to know exactly how much money was raised from the event but based on the entry fee of $5 they are expecting in the vicinity of $10,000.

All of the funds raised will go towards the Breast Cancer Support Service.

Iris says everyone got into the spirit of it, dressing in pink for the occasion, including a group of men who walked in honour of their wives, who they lost to cancer.

'Even the Mayor was wearing a pink shirt, pink really is his colour.”

About 4000 people dressed in pink for last year's event, raising an estimated $15,000.

Trust service coordinator Lea Lehndorf says as a completely independent, charitable trust, events such as Wednesday's walk are crucial for raising much needed funds.

Breast cancer affects an average 200 women in the Bay of Plenty every year and Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga Trust has an array of fundraisers and activities planned to offer help and support, says Lea.

Maddy Scott, 17, Mikaila McIntyre, 17, and Kylie Wood, 16 dress up for the event.

has absolutely NOTHING to do with breast health! Only to fill the coffers of the businesses that market all the pink products!

Do some research Kiwimon.

The cancer treatment industry is a scam. Chemo, radiation and surgery are big business making huge profits for the drug companies. I lost my father over two years ago after battling cancer for ten years with "traditional" toxic chemotherapy, if I knew then what i've learnt recently about REAL treatments then I could have still been talking to him. Have you heard of Rick Simpsons Hemp Oil, the Gerson Therapy, Hoxley, mega dose vitamin therapy, especially vitamin C, turmeric, apricot kernel and so on. I recommend watching "Food Matters", "Run from the Cure" "The Cancer Report", "The Gerson Miracle". DONT trust your doctor, he's just a dispensing agent for Big Pharmaceutical corporations. The body in good health and strong immune system can fight cancer. All the money well meaning people give to to the Pink thing just goes to drug companies to fund more experiments with more toxic chemicals reaping more profits for the shareholders. They dont want a cure for cancer because then they'll have no drugs to sell and doctors need sick people to keep themselves employed prescribing regular prescriptions of poison.
