Wet finish to week of beautiful weather

Waihi Golf Club member Rodger Bagshaw is reporting on the week that was, from November 13-18.

"[It was] a wet finish to a week of beautiful weather," says Rodger.

Monday Vets:

The Vets AGM was held prior to the weekly haggle which this week was the best three stableford scores of the four-person team.

With the course starting to firm up with the fine weather, some good scores were recorded.

The winning team by five shots was Bob Hoggard, Rodger Bagshaw, Jock Stronach and Gary Choat, and in second place was the team of Gary Dunning, Norm Sanderson, Earle White, and Gyan Prole.

Third placed were David Croker, John Libby, Judy Saunders, and Edna Connolly. Norm Sanderson had the only two.

Wednesday Ladies:

A very small field came to contest the first round of the Summer Cup.

The haggle of the day was nett, and the winner was Heather White, on a countback from Sally Sherson, with both ladies having nett 70’s.

All with Nett 75’s were Jenny Tubman, Jennifer Gallaugher, and Sharlene Stewart. Jenny Tubman won the hidden hole with 8 points.

At the recent Ladies AGM, Annette Hetherington was returned as Ladies Captain, and Desley Rosevear as Deputy.

Salley Grindlay is Treasurer, and Michell Libby the Saturday representative.

The Committee is Heather Watters, Megan Jowsey, Jill Morrison, Rosalind Giffney, and Heather White.

Thursday Men:

The fine weather brought out good field for both of the day’s stableford haggles. With the course in great condition there was some very good scoring recorded.

In the morning haggle, in Division 1, Allen Sarjant won on a countback from Blair Langdon, both having 40 points.

Next all on 39 were Bruce (Jackpot) Rutter, John Giffney, and Mathew Guptill.

In Division 2, “the occasional golfer” Bob Baunton scorched home with 44 points, ahead of Mark Mora with usually a winning score of 43 points.

Next Errol Millar held his form for 40 points, followed by Rob Morrison with 37,

In the afternoon haggle Rhys Peden had the top score with 40 points, followed by an unbelievable, six players with 38 points.

Those players were in countback order, Ron Arthur, Jonathan Clare, Bill Young, Logan Phillips, Mark Hope, and Rob Page. Michael Hurley had 37, ahead of eight others with 36 points.

Saturday Golf:

The predicted wet weather did arrive for Saturday golf, with the Ladies abandoning their competition, and only eight men ventured out for the morning haggle.

In fact only a very light drizzle plagued the players in very mild conditions.

In the morning haggle Rob Page was the leader with 37 points, with Tom Rowbotham and Sam Gurney next with 33 points.

The afternoon haggle was better attended with 24 players taking part. The clear winner with the round of the day was Harison Madsen with 42 points, with Charles Gurr in second place on 38 points.

All finishing with 36 points were Frank Van Hattum, Wayne Brierley, Grant Robson, Chris Pilmer, and Malcolm Coldicutt.
