Waihi golfers are enjoying the fine weather, with a successful Vets one-day tournament held this week.

Waihi Golf Club member Rodger Bagshaw is reporting on the week that was, from November 6 -12.

Waihi Vets One Day Tournament:

On Friday November 10 the Vets held a very successful tournament in which BEDS-R-US were the principal sponsor.

Good weather greeted a good-sized field, on a well-presented course where the greens staff had done a good job controlling the rampant spring growth.

A generous prize table was achieved through the generosity of the principal sponsor, and many Waihi and Waihi Beach businesses.

The tournament was run in two mixed divisions.

In Division 1, the Nett Winner was Norm Sanderson with 68 nett.

The Stableford Winner was Linley Wallace (Cambridge) with 38 points. Second was Blair Langdon (37), followed by Alex Teesdale and Anke Hermannsdorfer (both 36), and on 35 were Gyan Prole, Karen Lee, and Jenny Tubman.

In Division 2, the Nett Winner with the round of the day was Errol Millar with a nett 67. The Stableford Winner was Andrew McLennan with 37, on a countback from Adele Gunning.

Next were Jan Robinson, John Saunders, and Denise Morgan on 35 points. On 34 points were Catherine Blake, Kathy Ashton, and Avon Gordon.

Monday Vets - November 6:

After missing two Monday’s due to public holidays and weather, a great field of 51 Vets came out to play a stableford haggle this week in ideal weather conditions.

If you have a month’s European holiday, where you don’t touch a golf club the whole time, and the first game back you have the top score in the field, it proves you needed the break!

Willie Lynch achieved this with a round of 39 points, heading off John Libby on 38. Shoneen Dunning and David Crocker both had 37, while Bruce Rutter, Mark Mora, and Gyan Prole all finished on 36 points.

Thursday Men:

The morning men’s haggle was a nett competition, and the winner with a nett 69 was Bruce Rutter, on a countback from Mark Mora.

Tied on nett 70’s were Garry Towler, Brian Baynes, and Gyan Prole, with Earl Hoskins next on 71. Blair Langdon, Vince Jones, John Giffney, and Earle White all had nett 72.

The afternoon stableford haggle was a triumph for Club Manager David P. Campbell with 40 points, just ahead of Graeme Culton and Mark Hope on 39.

Chris Hale finished with 38, while Peter Bramble, Terry Gerbich, and Bill Young all had 37. With 36 points were Kelly Exelby, Alex Teesdale, and Ron Arthur.

Saturday Ladies:

A smaller than usual field played a nett haggle, and Desley Rosevear proved too strong with a nett 68, with Susan Mustard just behind with a 69. Karen May had 71, while Martine Milicich had a nett 74.

Saturday Men:

There was also a much smaller field for the morning stableford haggle, but Harry Shepherd had the best score with 40 points, just heading off John Libby with 39. Third was Norm Sanderson on 37, while on 36 were Sam Gurney, John Giffney, and Earl Hoskins.

In the afternoon haggle the scoring was tight, with Grant Robson taking the top spot on a countback from Mike Rose with 40 points.

Next was Dave Oliver with 39, while Mark Tomsett and Chris Hale both had 38 points. Richard Taitoko was on his own with 37, with Jacob Seymour, Mark Bryant, and Malcolm Coldicutt all finishing with 36 points
