Rodger Bagshaw from the Waihi Golf Club is reporting on the week that was, August 21 - 27.

Daffodil Day:

The usual Thursday monthly meat pack tournament in August becomes a very special event when the Waihi Golf Club combines with the Katikati Lions Club to raise funds for the Cancer Society.

This year’s 92 starters, of which players from nine other clubs took part, is always a very social tournament, thanks mainly to the Katikati Lions presenting a large multi draw raffle, and the always popular sausage sizzle on the course.

Hopefully a significant amount of money was raised for the Lions commendable efforts.

The major winners of the tournament were Allen Smith for the Gross with a nice 75, while the nett was taken out by David Campbell with a nett 39. The Stableford was a tight contest, and was won on a countback by Michael Matutinovich with 39 points.

The balance of prizes were based on stableford, and in division1, Gary Choat had 38, as did Frank Van Hattum, while Carol Leary and Alex Teesdale both had 37. Chris Pilmer and Jenny Tubman both finished with 36 points.

In division 2, the countback loser, John Drent was first with 39 points, just ahead of John Overdevest (Tahuna), Karen Lee, and Paul Morgan all with 38 points. On 37 were Kathy Ashton, Graham O’Dwyer, Ian McCulloch (Tahuna) and Graham Curd.

Tuesday Nine Hole:

A nice fine day at last for the section to hold a nett haggle.

In division 1, the men showed the way with Rex Smith winning with 31 nett, while John Vautier, Val McLoughlin, Vicky Knight, Margaret Meldrum and Lynda Thomson all finished with 36 nett.

In division 2, Christine Mercer was top with 33, well ahead of Eleanor Koedyk on 38. Alison Turner and Jill Mason both finished at 39 nett.

Wednesday Ladies:

Another very nice day brought out a good field for a nett medal haggle.

It produced some pretty hot scoring, with Heather White winning with a fantastic 62 nett. Next was Viv Lilley with an excellent 65, and likewise Jane Wordley with 67. Rae Wright had 69, while Edna Connolly finished on 71. In the hidden holes, Jill Morrison and Viv Lilley shared top spot with 9 points.

The “Dreamers Player of the Week” could be no other than Heather White with her 62 nett.

Saturday Ladies:

On a perfect sunny Saturday for golf, the ladies held a nett haggle as one of their competitions. Coming out on top due to a countback was Carol Leary, heading off Niria Gerbich with them both having 72 nett.

Next was Sharon Deacon with 73, then Shoneen Dunning, Shelley Lithgow, and Karen May all with 74 nett.

Saturday Men:

Slightly smaller fields this week, due mainly to some Championship matches being played.

In the morning haggle Allen Sarjant had an excellent round to finish with 42 points, next was Allen Smith continuing on his winning ways with 38 points (and two 2’s). Then Jock Stronach and Francis Gascoigne each with 37, and Jethro Meares who had 36 points.

In the afternoon haggle there was also good scoring at the top, with Charles Gurr coming home with 40 points, just heading off Nigel Sanderson with 39.

Next was Frank Van Hattum (who the handicapper must look at shortly!) and Russell Dewey who both scored 38 points, and they were followed by Ron Arthur and Harison Madsen who both finished with37. Mike rose was next with 35.
