A popular and enjoyable event on the Waihi Golf Club calendar each year is “The Woah to Go” ambrose day, where teams of four play the course in the reverse order.  This means they start from a tee adjacent to the 18th green, then play back to the 17th hole.

Nineteen teams contested this year’s event which was sponsored by Craigs Investment Partners, and played in dry, pleasant conditions.

The 2023 winning team was Dylan West, Mitchell West, Jethro Mears, and Zac Te Wake of Waihi, while second was the team of Drew Bolli (Morrinsville), Vynce Bolli (Horsham Downs), and Cole Robinson, and Connor Hodgson, (both Ngaruawhia).

In third place was Simon Mustard, Harison Madsen, Adam Ryan (Waihi), and Dogga Madsen (Te Puke).

MONDAY VETS:

In great sunny winter conditions 18 mixed pairs contested for the Mitchell Cup.

The winning pair were Wendy Matutinovich and Brian Baynes with a combined stableford score of 77 points, in second were Rae Brown & Rodger Bagshaw (74), then Vivienne Lilley & Bob Hoggard (72), and Dianne Douglas & Earle White (also 72).

As there were more men in attendance than ladies, a men’s section was held, and Peter Robinson & Francis Gascoigne won with 71 points, ahead of David Croker & Stephen Cooper (Cambridge) 68. Of the two’s scored, Allen Sarjant scored a two on the par 4, first hole.

TUESDAY NINE HOLE SECTION:

A good field enjoyed the conditions for a nett haggle, with the section captain Jenni Mora taking the top spot with a nett 31.

Next was Alison Turney with 33, then Glen Bennett 34, Rex Smith 35, and Lorraine Meyer, Val McLoughlin, & Elaine Goodwin all with nett 36’s.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

Another fine day, still with a brisk breeze for stableford haggle.

The day’s top scores were by Kathy Ashton, and Dot Ramsey, who both shot 33 points. Next was Di Lockwood with 32, and Wendy Matutinovich 31.

The hidden holes were shared between Mavis Bruce and Sue White.

‘’The Dreamers Player of the Week” was Jane Wordley with her fine 65 nett.

HUME MONTHLY MEATPACK TOURNAMENT:

With a field of almost 80 starters the day started well with just a cold wind, but then deteriorated to bitterly cold showers which made scoring difficult and playing most unpleasant.

This month’s Gross was won by Andy Roach with 80, on a countback from Murray Fraser.

The best nett was won by the in-form Rob Page with a 70 nett, while the best stableford was taken out by Vince Jones with 37 points. In the stableford for the rest, in division 1, Ted Murray was best with 36, followed by Mark Tomsett 35, John Taylor (some visiting club) & Howard Anderson 34. In division 2, Mark Mora and Graham Curd both had 36 points, with Raymond Fisher next with 35, and Rex Knight 34.

The same thing that happened earlier in the week, Ray Fisher scored a hole in two on the par 4 first hole. Many of us thought he couldn’t hit 2 shots that far!

SATURDAY GOLF:

Players were delighted to play in sunny springtime conditions on Saturday.

Ladies played a stableford haggle with Megan Jowsey winning with a very creditable 40 points, with Niria Gerbich next with 37, then Mavis Bruce 35. Susan Mustard, Shoneen Dunning, and Kathy Ashton all had 34 points.

Morning Men seemed to enjoy the conditions with some good scores. In division 1, John Libby won with 41 points, with Daryll Denyer next with 40. Ken Mustard and David Seager both had 34. In division 2, Rodger Bagshaw amazingly had 43 points, ahead of Bob Hoggard with 41, then Tom Rowbotham on 38. Sam Gurney and Mark Mora both had 37.

Afternoon Men: Despite a good-sized field the scoring wasn’t quite as good earlier, with Frank Van Hattum and Howard Anderson being the best with 36 points.

Charles Gurr, David P. Campbell, and Gary Choat all had 35, with Ron Arthur, Mike Rose, and Gary Dunning, all with 34.
