Emergency services are responding to a car fire in Te Puke.

Police say they were called to assist with the fire on Jocelyn Street at around 3.35pm.

A SunLive reader at the scene says there is one fire truck and two police cars at the scene.

“It’s historically been a camp with homeless people living there for the last year or two,” says the SunLive reader.

“It’s out of sight, out of mind, behind the library. The car is one that someone has been staying in, sleeping in.

“There’s quite a homeless population in Te Puke and one of the campsites is at the reserve. Behind the car is a bunch of trees where they have tents.

“There were no members of the public there [while the car was on fire], just emergency services."

“We first received a call at 3.35pm,” says Fire and Emergency NZ Northern Shift Manager Garreth Lewis.

Garreth says a fire truck the Te Puke Fire Brigade attended the scene.

“It was just the vehicle on fire by itself, and we have now extinguished it and left.”

It is unknown at this stage how the fire started.

Police say there are no reports of injuries.
