It's been a real winter week for Waihi golfers, writes Waihi Golf Club member Rodger Bagshaw in his weekly report.

Rodger says the week had "a very wet beginning and end, but with a lot of very cold and strong winds for the players to contend with".

Read Rodger's report for the week ending Saturday July 8, 2023, below:

MONDAY VETS:

After starting in cloudy weather, the day deteriorated into bitingly cold wind, and frequent heavy squalls which made a for most unpleasant finish for the players.

While some matchplay games were played, a good number of starters finished their haggle round.

First was Tom Wallace with 34 points, with Shoneen Dunning next with 33. All on 32 were Mark Mora, Rob Morrison, Gary Dunning, Adele Gunning, Kaylene Croker, and Rae Brown. Diane Lewis had the only two in the haggle.

NINE HOLE SECTION:

With still a strong cold wind making its present felt the Nine Hole players contested a stableford haggle.

Well clear in front was Val McLoughlin with 22 points, with Christine Mercer next on 19. Tangiia Tukatara, and John Vautier both had 18 points, with Vicky Knight next on 17.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

A good sized field of ladies played a stableford haggle with Michelle Libby topping the scoring with 37 points (and taking out the hidden hole), ahead of Jenny Tubman on 36. Avon Gordon, Edna Connolly, and Annette Hetherington all scored 35 points, followed by Jacquie Bain on 34.

For the second time in three weeks, Avon Gordon was 'The Dreamers Player of the Week”, this time with her 73 nett.

THURSDAY MEN:

Players enjoyed a fine day, but the wind remained on the cool side.

In the morning haggle John Giffney score a very good 41 points, with our veteran golfer Bob Hoggard next with 39, and then Rob Page with38, Bryan Bains 36, and great to see Bill Tiffin back with 34.

In the afternoon haggle, with a good sized field, it was pleasing to see the organiser (sometimes called the chief cook and bottle washer) David Campbell come out on top, alongside Ken Mustard with 40 points.

They were just ahead of Charles Pipe with 37, while Greg Bundle, and Daryll Denyer who both scored 36 points, Graeme Culton had 35.

SATURDAY LADIES:

A small field played a nett haggle in fine weather, but with a cold wind.

First was Phillipa Harvey with nett 73, followed By Kaylene Croker (74), and Denise Donald (78)

SATURDAY MEN:

Allen Sarjant lead the morning stableford haggle with 41 points, well clear of Tom Rowbotham in second with 37.

Allen Smith must have sunk some putts this week for 35 points, along side Ken Purcell on the same score. Mark Mora and Wayne Green both had 34.

In the afternoon haggle it was a battle for supremacy with Richard Taitoko, John Taylor, Alex Standfield, Alex Teesdale, all tied at the top with 36 points.

David Campbell continued with his run of form as he and Chris Hale both had 35, while Mal Coldicutt, and Garry Towler both finished with 34 points.
