Rail underpass build underway for Strand extension

To help the community connect with the Tauranga Waterfront more easily, Tauranga City Council is building a pedestrian underpass beneath the railway line at the southern end of The Strand Extension, near the Harbourside Restaurant.

According to TCC, in time this underpass will provide a link with a new boardwalk into the city centre.

Contractors are currently undertaking sheet piling work until April 2, as part of preparations to install the rail underpass culvert, which will take place over a short timeframe at Easter.

While sheet piling is taking place, people in the area can expect to see heavy machinery on site, hear construction noise and vibration. 'The team will be doing everything they can to minimise this as much as possible.”

At times, road access will be restricted to one lane with stop/go management in place. Some public carparks located along the railway side of The Strand Extension will be unavailable and these will be clearly indicated. Access for businesses, including Harbourside Restaurant, and residents will be maintained.

How about putting that section of the train line underground, heck it could even double as a passenger cetral station in years to come, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Not really

Even with the maximum possible gradient it is not possible to put the railway line completely underground anywhere along The Strand. Nice idea, but not possible.

think ahead

who can enjoy the Strand waterfront with diesel freight trains thundering through? The government should pay for a rail bridge in parallel with the traffic bridge, bypassing the city centre.

Way down a little back alley you put an almighty expensive underpass. Why not put it in town? Why put it at all? Where are your stat's to backup it's necessity? All it will be is a urine smelling, graffitied billboard that's a danger from a few to walk through.

There will be NO STOP to the spending. There is no accountability just spending dreams of those out of control.

Weekend Hotspot Opinion Poll

The current poll on Sunlive tells us that people choose to not go to Tauranga at all. Why bother spending more money on things that no one is going to use because people don't actually like going to the cbd anymore.

You mean Sunlive reads don't go to the CBD. That doesn't mean that other people in the city don't. As we know, Sunlive tends to be over subscribed to a particular demographic that still live in 1980.
