Kawerau principal announcement nears

A new Kawerau school principal is expected to be announced at the end of this month as plans for a schooling restructure continue in the town.

A new Year 7 to 13 school is being established in Kawerau as the Ministry of Education forges ahead with its amalgamation plans.

Education Minister Hekia Parata has already announced a board of trustees for the school.

The plan to merge Kawerau Intermediate with Kawerau College was announced early last year, despite the town voting against the amalgamation.

Former Education Minister Anne Tolley took a proposal to the community with several different options as they looked at ways of dealing with the declining school roll numbers in 2010.

Despite the outcome of the community vote, Anne decided to merge the intermediate and the college, as well as merging two of the three primary schools.

Court action opposing the Ministry's decision was dismissed last week, as Kawerau Intermediate battled to keep their school open.

Principal Daryl Aim says he is disappointed with the decision.
