Police raid Bay parties

A ‘Black and White' party organised by a Rotorua teen had police out in force as they prepared for thousands of teens, including some from Tauranga, to descend on the town.

Police raided a number of parties on Saturday night.

Police say alcohol can only be supplied to someone under 18-years-old by a parent or guardian.

An underage party invitation went viral on Facebook on Friday and saw more than 1000 people accept the invitation.

Rotorua Police warned they would shut down the party if anything got out of hand.

However, Police say there were no reports of anything out of the ordinary.

The party was organised by a 17-year-old who sold tickets to students at high schools in Rotorua.

It was further promoted on Facebook, which sparked concern from police.

Rotorua police area commander Inspector Bruce Horne says the anyone who arranges an illegal party would not only incur criminal liability for breaching the Sale of Liquor Act, but will also be held liable should someone get hurt attending such an event.

He says it is illegal to supply anyone under the age of 18 with alcohol, even if a parent or guardian gives their consent to someone being allowed to consume liquor at a private address.

Bruce says only a parent or guardian can supply liquor to someone who is under 18 and in their care.
