City bus drivers stop work tomorrow

Go bus drivers in Tauranga are stopping work for two hours tomorrow morning, in a move expected to disrupt some services.

About 30 bus drivers are attending a stop work meeting with First Union representatives between 9:00am and 11:00am to discuss their contracts.

Eleven of the 30 drivers are rostered to work during the time of the meeting and have voted to take strike action to attend, says union co-ordinator Lousia Jones.

The union gave Go Bus more than three weeks' notice for the meeting but the company failed to arrange cover, says Louisa.

'It's a shame the company wouldn't work with us to allow members to attend these once yearly meetings” says Bus Drivers First spokesperson Rudd Hughes.

The behaviour is what they have come to expect from Go Bus.

'Go Bus is a very hostile company to deal with” says Rudd. 'Their low-wage operating style has driven down pay rates in the industry”.

The union is in wage negotiations with Go Bus for around 150 of the company's employees. The union has been critical of Go Bus for its role in the wages being slashed for hundreds of drivers' in South Auckland.

Go Bus is also one of the targets of a union campaign called Bus Fair. The campaign is calling for councils to adopt ethical tendering processes when putting bus contracts out to the market.

Go Bus has been contacted but management was unable to respond when SunLive called.

Driving a bus doesn't make them a bus driver and the incompetent drivers call Go Bus hostile and want better money for the crappy job too many of them do. They give the good ones a bad name.

the drivers have a right to meet, they have given notice, if the company is too hopeless to sort this out, it says more about them than the drivers.

The real reason they will not negotiate is that they were too cheap with there tender it is the same with all their contracts NZ wide, just saying.

Oh dear I feel sorry for all those passengers "at least 50" who won't get a ride. The whole bus thing in Tauranga is a very expensive joke. Get rid of it or use 1/2 a dozen mini vans to replace all those empty busses.

And...

...I bet the owners of Go Bus aren't on low wages!

Ponder this

at work for 55hrs get paid for 44, some timetables are pretty much non stop so drivers as they are humans need to go within 3-4hrs or so, last year 2016 some 20+ drivers left so whats the reason/s, sorry about my other post but the bus network needs an independent body to run the show

here we go again

Agree with all comments, they do clog up the streets, and run aroumd all day with nobody in them up to 8pm,last bus 6 oclock, if you mis stiff you know what, walk home , i was out near Evans rd other day and at least 6 buses went passed only one person on board out of 6, what a polution way running all day empty, my gosh, well you people will have too find another way of getting to work and you will, (because you did )when NO buses run, they should all stay out for a week at least and let all the SMOG clear away, leaving buses idling in Willow street, you can hardly breathe on still days, also peecee09 hit it on the head, LPG vans with no polution is the answer, good story Sunlive,Thankyou, 10-4 out.
