Avocado thefts on the rise

Avocado thefts in Katikati, Te Puna, and Whakamarama are on the rise, according to police. File photo.

High prices for avocados means opportunistic thieves out to make an easy buck are raiding Western Bay of Plenty orchards.

Police have reported more incidents of avocado thefts in Katikati, Te Puna, and Whakamarama in recent weeks.

In an update for Katikati Neighbourhood Support, Sergeant Steve Hindmarsh says a Walford Road orchardist reported arriving at his orchard on the morning of July 21 to find a white Toyota Hiace van or similar with grey primer on the bottom parked outside.

'A male Caucasian aged 45 to 55 years, solid build with a grey beard was with the van. On entering the orchard the orchardist found avocado trees had been raided and a sleeping bag was found nearby containing about 100 kg of fruit.

'The van then left the area in a hurry. We would like to hear from anyone who saw the van in the area or from anyone who thinks they may know the occupant of the van. The orchardist did the right thing and called 111 straight away.”

Steve adds that, ironically, he was helping out the Tauranga Police at the time with enquiries into an avocado theft in Whakamarama, and were unable to locate the van heading in their direction.

Katikati Senior Constable John Fitzgerald says police tend to see a spike in avocado thefts when the price of the fruit is high.

'We'd like growers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. It's a good idea to make a note of registration numbers, and put in place any preventative measures they can.”

These losers don't go to palmers and buy a few plants themselves. If they want the cash whybdont they just grow a few in their own yards. Maggots.

Probably can't grow their own due to lack of space occupied by the dope plants that feed their empty heads.

i agree with papamoaner and tgaboy...some people just want stuff for nothing, they dont care about anybody else and think the whole world owes them...why work for it when you can take stuff for nothing....
