UPDATED: 9.36AM: A man is dead after a collision between a train and car in the Bay of Plenty.

Police are at the scene of the fatal crash near State Highway 2, in Otamarakau.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 8.35am.

"The male driver of the car died at the scene. There are no further injuries," says police.

"The collision occurred near the Sandpit Campground, just past the Otamarakau Valley Road intersection.

"While police are working to inform next-of-kin, no further details are available at this time.".

UPDATED 9.19AM: One person has been seriously injured in the train crash in the Bay of Plenty.

Emergency services are at the scene of the crash, which is located on the train tracks near the intersection of State Highway 2 and Otamarakau Valley Road.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru says one person is trapped in a vehicle and is understood to be seriously injured.

'Firefighters at the scene are attempting to remove the man from the vehicle.”

Reports are coming in of a crash between a car and train on State Highway 2, near Otamarakau.

Details are limited but a caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says a vehicle has been hit by a train on the tracks just past the Otamarakau Valley Road and SH2 intersection.

The crash is off the road and the caller believes there will be no traffic delays.

A police spokesperson says one person was trapped in the vehicle, but is unaware of any injuries.
