Ideas sought for ‘activating’ demo site

Do you have a brilliant and vibrant idea for utilising the Willow Street site after the Tauranga City Council administration building is demolished?

The city council is seeking registrations of interest 'to activate the site” for a period following the demolition of the building up until investment decisions are made on the future of the space.

TCC city transformation general manager Jaine Lovell-Gadd says council is looking for a partner to deliver a programme of coordinated events and opportunities for the community to come together and enjoy the space.

'We're envisaging partnering with a company or organisation that would facilitate, manage and create a sensational and surprising space that would draw people into the city centre. This could be a calendar of events and activities on site that bring vibrancy and fun to the city centre.”

Registrations of interest close 2pm on April 13.

Jaine says the activities offered would need to align with the purpose of the Heart of the City programme, which is to work in partnership to create a vibrant, safe and successful city centre, and council's shared aspiration for Tauranga to be an internationally competitive city.

The 1800m2 space would be a temporary placeholder until the site is developed.

TCC is currently developing business cases for a museum, city library and new performance venue, which could be located on the site. Investment decisions will be part of the 2018-28 Long Term Plan deliberations in June 2018.

The tender to deconstruct and demolish the administration building is also currently being evaluated.

The Registration of Interest document is available on the government's GETS website or by emailing Tauranga City Council city project analyst Clinton Bowyer at: clinton.bowyer@tauranga.govt.nz

I heard a rumour the NZ Fire Service is looking for a central city location larger than their current site on Cameron Rd, be a great central location for a Fire Station.

Build a monument to the god of money wasters....a massive gold statue with the Mayor's head and all the councilors in the form of lap dogs forming a circle around him.

They can play with mates, take a dump and a leak, sniff each other's backside. Much better use of the space. Will probably come up with better ideas too. Win win.

A Reminder

Build a sewage disposal works to remind the Council that infrastructure may be out of sight but has to come first

Please do not close any streets anywhere in the CBD and turn the area into a desperately needed car park. Because Jaine and her mates have removed enormous numbers of car parks in the CBD there will be no where to park for anybody wanting to attend her activities and events . Come on Jaine, wake up and face the real problems in the CBD and the shortage of parks is the major one. Hamilton will be well ahead of Tauranga when they implement their first two hours parking free in October. Well done Hamilton.

Quote "Having nine people on the TAG enables Council to receive advice from a comprehensive range of experts with particular strengths in areas relevant to the Heart of the City programme"
