Winston wows Tauranga crowd

Unemployment, the global financial crisis and child abuse are among the issues New Zealand First leader Winston Peters spoke about at Classic Flyers today.

Winston Peters speaks at the public meeting in Tauranga.

The public meeting was attended by about 170 people, most of who were senior citizens.

Winston's messages were well received.

'A day of reckoning has arrived on many accounts,” Winston told the group. 'Accounting for the past, securing the future, that's what the 2011 election is going to be about.”

He believes retaining skilled New Zealanders is a key part of the country's future.

'Every year tens of thousands of New Zealanders leave because they can find a better life overseas.

'These people have generally been trained in an area that is needed here but the wages are too low or the conditions so poor that they can do far better overseas.”

Winston says it makes no sense to bring in huge migrant numbers while thousands of New Zealanders remain unemployed.

Are you sure 1000 people is a huge number. If that was so it is an amazing turnout.Unemployment, financial crisis child abuse, FS&SB ACT,preferential treatment of maori, Maori seats etc etc are major issues and support will grow for any party that is prepared to address them.

1000 People??

I am not sure where your reporter gets the numbers, but I was in another meeting @ Classic Flyers at the same time and there is simply no way it was even close to 1000 people. I would struggle to see how 1000 people could even fit in that building. 100 maybe......I really enjoy your website and get on it every day, but please get your facts right. The last thing we need is to read that Winston is more popular than he really is........

not popular

I agree with Kiwiwayno winston is not popular here anymore so why are people still following him, he only did one thing for Tauranga and nothing else.

Coming to a parcel shelf near you

I don't usually watch lame patsy unchallenged video promos like this, but I'm glad I did with this one. The two nodding dogs at either side of the old bloodhound are hilarious.

1000! Wow! If you've ever been to a Winston meeting you will know that he insists on the seat rows to be wider apart and the seats also.... therefore it looks like a full hall....!

Newsroom: meeting attendance numbers

Thanks for your comments on this issue. As a result of your queries, SunLive has checked up on the information supplied to us and the original estimate was incorrect. The head count was confused by people coming and going from other meetings. We now believe the number specifically attending the NZ First event to be about 170. The article is amended.

Thanks to Writerman

After reading your comment I had no other option but to watch the video ... i have absolutely no idea what WP said, however the two 'nodding dogs' kept me entertained. Thanks

I quite like the video - on mute. I'm told that there was quite a bit of nodding in the audience (it was hardly a crowd)- nodding off to sleep that is! This is not a political party of substance anymore. Without Winston the First, or even with him, it forgets to add that its promises are totally conditional on a major party being prepared to hook up with them. The Nats have already said "No" and it's my guess Labour would be rethinking taking on as a Minister a guy that has NEVER completed a term without his warrant being suspended or taken off him! Come on Tauranga - move on from this guy and his nodding puppies.

Winston just another one

Posted on 11-08-2011 19:21 | By The Tomahawk Kid

The thieves and looters in the UK riots were not just lower income and unemployed - they were from all walks of life - Brits who have become dependant on welfare for their living. People who have no idea of the words property rights. something that has been stolen from them by burreaucrats and politicians. People who dont care where things come from or who has to pay for them - just so long as they can get them. People who have been led to believe that Robin Hood and Arthur Dailey were GOOD GUYS instead of thieves. A nation of people who think its a right to get something for nothing. But Winston is right to say that we are heading the same way. Only he wants MORE of what is getting us there. In one breath he complains about how the rich are getting richer, yet he doesnt like the idea of young people going overseas to earn more money! You cant have it both ways mate - Winston Peters is just another unprincipled bureaucrat - they ALL make me sick.

Place was packed

Obviously your correspondents were not at this meeting. The place was packed and many had to stand outside.. 200 plus would be nearer the mark. They may have been predominantly oldies but their collective political wisdom was impressive. Several younger people too. Winston represents the pre 1984 style of politician which parliament sadly lacks today. Kirk Holyoake Holland and Savage who could be trusted. He was betrayed by those who listened to the political assassins who still abound today

Amazing!

I watched the video, complete with Noddies in the BG) and found myself starting to think what a GREAT idea it is to connect Welfare with Child Abuse. How does he do that? :-) I think if he said the sun wasn't going to rise tomorrow, I'd go and buy a candle. What is it about this man that is so persuasive? :-) It was only after I sat down calmly and thought about it that I realised it would be almost impossible to ever implement such a scheme, and maybe it isn't such a good idea anyway... But good Ol' Winston had me going for a while there... :-) I think that maybe he is like a big fish in a small pond, the competition amongst MPs (and I exclude Simon from this because he is actually one of the good guys, whatever your politics are) is pretty paltry. If you had to choose between say, Rodney Hyde or Donald Brash and Winston, would it be so hard? He probably is "yesterday's man" but he still speaks well and his sincerity comes through, even when what he's saying is probably nonsense. I like him (and I wish him well) but I can't, in all seriousness, vote for him.

oh no

"Rodney Hyde or Donald Brash and Winston" i cant believe people want these fools in power and winnie needs to be here he has more substance than any current mp

Vote Policy not Personality.

I was there at classic flyers, there were at least 180 of us there. Some of you have asked why winston still has followers. The answer is the policy, It's unfortunate we live in a world where Public relations wins over Policy, I'm a follower of winston and I will vote NZ First because they are the only party to promise not to sell OUR assets, to ablish tax funded public relations ( funfact, john key has 125 people in his office to advise him on publis relations-All paid for by YOU)To premote the training of young new zealanders instead of outsourcing. Voting is prehaps the most important thing anyone of us will ever do, It's REALLY important you know the policy of your chosen party.

Xenocrates. John Key has 125 staff? really, I mean REALLY? That's nearly as many as Winston First's membership numbers isn't it? Last time I looked (just a minute ago) there were fewer than 30. I guess you've been listening to THAT guy speak again.

It is amusing to read of the negative comments here about Mr. Peters visit, I would suggest most were not present and are afraid of the truth, which is many people who 'were' loyal Nat voters are really not happy with the policy to partial sell our hard earned assets, and are looking for a moderate alternative.Keep your head in the sand, but just check out the poll results on Horizon.com. Very interesting which is not pleasing your local candidates. As for the numbers game at the cafe, why were there so many people standing around the walls and out on the deck? Plus it was a Wednesday and naturally it was attended by the retirees, the rest were at WORK!!
