A body, believed to be that of the person who went into the water from a boat on the lake on Sunday afternoon, has been recovered from Lake Rotoiti.

The body was located off Gisborne Point at about 3pm on Tuesday afternoon, says a police spokesperson.

A post mortem will be carried out later.

There will be no further updates until the deceased's next of kin has been notified, say police.

The age and gender of the body is not going to be made public at this time at the request of the family.

'Unless the family successfully apply to the Coroner for suppression, we will be releasing further details about the deceased, including their name, age and gender.

'However, at this stage we do not know when that will be. Our priority at the moment is working with the family to notify next of kin and assist them through that process at this difficult time.”
