Traffic delays on SH2 near Katikati

It's a different week, but the same tune. Traffic on State Highway 2, near Katikati, is experiencing delays.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says road works contractors are sealing a 200m stretch of road near Thompson's Track and Walker Road East.

'Northbound traffic is backed up to Wright Road and the other direction would be back up to at least Katikati.

'We were stuck for about 10 minutes. The traffic is backing up really quickly.”

Another caller says he was stuck in the traffic for about 20 minutes earlier this morning.

Acting State Highways Manager, Mark Haseley, says NZ Transport Agency contractors are continuing to carry out the resealing work on State Highway 2.

"Some of the work planned for last week was rescheduled so it didn't happen at the busiest time on the roads.

"The work is being timed to minimise disruption to traffic, and take advantage of the good weather to provide a high quality seal and prolong the pavement life.

"Resealing work will also take place between Tetley Road and Hot Springs Road starting from 5am Tuesday morning. People can expect delays.

"We are monitoring the site and will reschedule the work again if there are significant delays."

really a 10-20 minute delay? sit back and enjoy the ride - leave a bit earlier if travelling - the work has to be done - complaints would still be being made if it didn't get done - damned if you do and damned if you don't

Yes this time of year ideal to reseal but surely there needs to be surveys made to see when traffic is at its lowest point for work. Just you wait traffic into New Plymouth in March for Womad will get road works, has happened for the last few years, and not from rain damage etc.

Roadworks Timed

to create as much inconvenience and costs to business and the public as possible. Has nothing to do with when it is the best time for road works. Te Puke and the surrounding area will be again targeted for road works around April, May and June. This has happened, to my knowledge, every year for the past 7 years and it coincides with the Kiwifruit Harvest.

Chips and cracks

Huge amount of chip being transported on wheels - my car was paint chipped and my windscreen was cracked, well after the road works from other cars carrying chip on their wheels. Most unusual that my tyres help metal for several kms afterwards? More sweeping required or has the wrong chip/seal been used? Yes, agree that this didn't seem urgent and has added to the traffic congestion in an already busy road reaching capacity.
