When there's an increase of people, there's an increase of rubbish. That's certainly been the case in the Mount Maunganui area during this holiday season.
Rubbish bins have been overflowing in Tay St, Pilot Bay and other area in the Mount during the last few days.
But at least Bay of Plenty residents and holidaymakers are dumping their rubbish where they're supposed to.
This could be thanks to a pilot project launched by Keep Tauranga Beautiful and Tauranga City Council to help holidaymakers dispose of their waste at tourism hotspots during the festive season.
Six recycling stations, staffed by recycling ambassadors, are in place around Tauranga, with two downtown, on The Mall in Pilot Bay and at Mount Maunganui's Main Beach.
Keep Tauranga Beautiful branch chairman Marty Hoffart says the project was a great way of not only promoting sensible waste management but also showcasing Tauranga.
'We live in such a beautiful city with incredible beaches and natural attractions and this is a great chance to show all our visitors how much we care about keeping the place clean and tidy.”
The recycling ambassadors will be in place from 10am-6pm until January 6. Their job is to help educate and assist the public dispose of their rubbish in one of the three receptacles; compost, recycling or landfill.
They will also be monitoring council-managed rubbish bins, alerting contractors when the bins overflow or need servicing.
Tauranga City Council's Resource Recovery and Waste team member Chris Glenn says contractors scheduled an extra rubbish collection to help cope with the increase in waste.
'With more people in town, and especially in the Mount, we do see an increase in rubbish during the holiday season.
'We have also increased the number of bins across the city, including 40 to 50 additional bins along the Mount to Papamoa strip.”
The bins are emptied at about 7am every day, and later around 3pm or 4pm.
If there is an unusual amount of rubbish scattered or dumped throughout parks or on pavements, the public is encouraged to call the council call centre on 07 577 7000 and a team will be sent out to clean up the area.
