Splish splash safely this summer

Nothing beats a swim on a scorching summer day, but if you’re planning on letting your kids go for a dip in an inflatable pool or if they’re going to use Inflatable toys and swimming aids like water wings then make sure they do so safely. File Photo.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's Trading Standards team is encouraging Kiwis to play safely when using inflatable swimming pools and toys this summer.

Inflatable pools and toys are a favourite in Kiwi's backyards over the summer but they're not designed to keep children safe in water, says Trading Standards principal advisor Martin Rushton.

'The inflatable pool might just be for wading, paddling and splashing about, but check the depth – if the pool is 400mm or deeper it must be fenced and comply with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act.

'Inflatable toys and swimming aids, such as water wings, also carry risks. They can help support a child in the water while they learn how to swim, but should not be relied upon to keep your child safe - children still need supervision at all times while in the water.”

If you're planning on heading out this weekend to stock up on the inflatables, consider a few key safety requirements before you buy to ensure you understand the risks associated with the product.

The packaging information will tell you the safe age range for toy use, the depth of a pool, and whether the product complies with New Zealand flotation aid safety standards, says Martin.

'Make water safety a priority for you and your family this Christmas.”

Everything you need to know before you buy inflatable pools and toys this summer, including how to use water toys safely, is detailed on the Consumer Protection Keeping Kids Safe website.

Trading Standards is an operational unit in the Consumer Protection and Standards branch of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and is responsible for protecting New Zealand consumers.
