John Key was a ‘very disappointing' Prime Minister.
That's the report card from Tauranga's Peter Malcolm, spokesperson for the income equality lobbyist group, Closing the Gap.
'There will be some who think he's been a great Prime Minister,” says Peter Malcom.
'But there will be many very disappointed that such a capable leader, who could have taken the country with him, chose to avoid the difficult problems of endemic inequality and poverty in New Zealand.”
He says over the last eight years, under Key's stewardship, income for those-in-need has stagnated or gone backwards in real terms, whereas those in the top percentiles of income have seen significant increases.
Exacerbating this inequality, the housing market is totally out of control, with affordable housing for beneficiaries and those on lower incomes now non-existent.
'There are now significant numbers of families who cannot afford to go to their GPs in times of need. Public hospital elective surgery lists are getting longer and many can't afford the health insurance which would ensure surgery when needed.”
Closing the Gap also points to rising cost of power, the rising cost of day to day living for those in need is getting worse and child poverty is as bad.
'Income inequality has seriously damaging effects on our society and the lower paid are increasingly having to bear an unfair proportion of the costs.
'After three terms it's hardly something to be proud of that, in his own words, things have remained pretty much the same for the last 20 years.”
Closing the Gap hopes successive Prime Ministers recognise they are responsible for all the people in New Zealand and not just a wealthy few.

which is something John Key had trouble with - a Mr Nice Guy who was afraid to rock the boat for fear of losing votes & the support of Maori Party. John Key will only be remembered as the PM who wasted millions of tax payer $$$ on a personal crusade to change our national flag.

Well, no matter where yo go there will always be people who say "what did he do for me?Forget the Global financial crisis, the Canterbury quakes or the Pike River disaster.Forget how many roads the guy has built around the country to cope with population growth that after nine years in power Aunty Helen choose to ignore.Forget the thaw in the relationship with the United States and that he can count President Obama as a personal friend.Forget the overhaul of the tax system for small business'.Forget that he donates a significant portion of his income to charity.Yeah, What did he do for me?
Trying to remember

John Key has only been for rich and didn't care about others. And if we get a Bill English Leader with A Simon Bridges Deputy things sure won't change.Tax Cuts for the wealthy ( to collect the votes) and nothing for the ones down the bottom. There are plenty of other things that can help but Tax cuts.Other than brag about the things done on the roads What else have you done Simon?

"Closing the Gap" what about shutting your trap. A spiteful and vitriolic article by someone who runs with the" John Key the rich p... " attitude. Remember he came from a state house life and made his own way through life with NO handouts. John Key has been by far our best PM yet and to see him retire, mainly I would suggest because of media intrusiveness in his life is disappointing. Perhaps Peter Maicolm you would be better advised to campaign for the babies in NZ beaten to death every year.....something worthwhile.
Cheers Jimmy

Hey fella, I forgot to mention the increases in health spending. Just look at our own hospital. Also forgot the extra million dollars a year for each district health board can now allocate to our hospice so they can provide the very best care when our loved ones are reaching their final days. Yeah mate but like Peter Malcolm and his ilk, "what did he do for me?"

mickey mouse, I absolutley agree with you...well said.....today it's all about 'what's in it for me' these people forget who it is that is actually paying for their life style...don't get me wrong, there are genuine needy but unfortunatley there are those who believe it's their entitlement...no it's not!!!!! The government don't pay you.....the tax payer does.... (that's the work force and I think they rightly so have had enough!!!!!) the government just hand it out. I would like to know how many unemployed do charity work, could be an interesting study.
