Flurry of activity near White Island

There's a whole lot of shaking going on just off the coast of White Island at the moment.

Four light-intensity earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 2.6 to 2.8, have all struck between five to 10 kilometres north of the volcanic island since 9.27pm on Friday.

GeoNet reports the first quake, measuring 2.8 in magnitude, struck at 9.27pm on Friday 5km north of White Island at a depth of 11km.

The second was then recorded at 1:16am on Saturday and measured 2.6 in magnitude, this time striking 5km north-west of White Island at a depth of 9km.

Several hours passed before the third quake struck 10km north of White Island at 12:21pm, measuring 2.8 in magnitude and occurring at a depth of 9km.

While the fourth and most recent quake hit at 2:01 pm, measuring 2.8 in magnitude and struck 5km north of White Island at a depth of 10km.

GeoNet has listed all four as ‘light intensity'.
