The gamut of breakdowns

A flat battery, an engine seized, a blown head gasket, overheating, electrical problems, loss of steering…Tauranga boaties were suffering over Labour Weekend.

Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard Volunteers attended nine separate incidents over the weekend says Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard training officer Donna Bennett.

Both the coastguard craft TECT Rescue and the Sealegs were in action, and the coastguard was also helped out by the public as well.

Donna doesn't believe all the incidents are the result of lack of preparation or maintenance.

'This is the first big boating weekend of the year,” says Donna. 'A lot of boats that haven't been used all winter. That's sometimes what we see, but that's not necessarily the case.

'I think bad luck really in some ways. The fact that it's such a mixed bag. It's not one thing that's happened across the board.

'I think it's merely sheer numbers. If there's a lot of people out there it's going to happen and the weather wasn't too bad.”

There were no medical incidents, nobody was in danger and everybody got home safe and sound, says Donna.
