A truck driver was 'fortunate” to walk away unscathed after his vehicle and trailer overturned on a roundabout near Paengaroa on Wednesday.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says it was also lucky no other vehicles were involved when the truck rolled at the State Highway 33/State Highway 2 roundabout shortly before 4pm.

'The truck and trailer unit was travelling on State Highway 2 away from Whakatāne and entered the roundabout intending to drive onto the Tauranga Eastern Link. About three quarters of the way through the manoeuvre, both the heavy motor vehicle and trailer tipped over.

'This resulted in the truck blocking one lane and the trailer blocking access onto the roundabout from Te Puke Highway,” says Ian.

'Fortunately there were no injuries and no other vehicle was involved.”

A crane and tow truck were dispatched to the scene and Ian says northbound traffic was stopped for a period while the truck and trailer were lifted back on to their wheels at about 6pm.

'Traffic was flowing throughout, so whilst there was some minor delays I'm not aware of any major or significant disruption.”

The truck had been transporting a large container at the time of the crash, with a reporter at the scene estimating it to be about 40 feet long.

Police's Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit is currently investigating the crash.
