SH2 re-opens after crash

Traffic is being diverted down Bell, Parton and Tara roads.

UPDATED: 5.30pm. State Highway 2 has re-opened following a three car accident between Welcome Bay Road and Bell Road earlier.

The crash closed the road with traffic diverted via Tara Road, Parton Road and Bell Road.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was dispatched at 3pm to T ePuke Highway, where a light truck, van and car collided.

The accident happened near a sweeping bend.

A spokesperson for helicopter says most passengers escaped with minor injuries, apart from a 69-year-old woman, who had to be cut from her vehicle by the New Zealand Fire Service.

She received serious arm and leg injuries and was flown to Tauranga Hospital for further treatment.

The helicopter was called due to the patient being trapped and requiring immediate hospital care once she was cut free.

think this is about the fourth or fifth crash in as many hours. maybe just maybe our roads aren't ready for the volume of cars and trucks we see on them everyday?? having driven all over the world i seem to think our infrastructure and way we go about roading is about ten years behind the rest of the civilized world..

Sorry, but have to agree with Anarchy 289

The roads in the Bay of Plenty, just don't cut the mustard anymore, when it comes to the current traffic volumes. Forget about all the new flash roads that the National "pollies" want you to accept as "improvements". The simple answer is that the "over the hill" to the Waikato needs to be TWO lanes all the way. The road from Tauranga to Katikati needs to be TWO lanes each way (oh yes with a by-pass for Katikati), and from Katikati onwards it needs to be a two/one and one/two lane road. OH and between Bethlehem and Katikati, there should be a NO RIGHT TURN, from any side roads - across highway traffic just like many roads in Aussie). Turn left and then reverse you direction at the next available right hand turn..............

Drivers not Roads

Drivers have and cause crashes... NOT roads! Fact is, most NZ drivers require work, not the roads.Stop blaming roads for road crashes... it's the nut behind the wheel that should recognise the road conditions and react accordingly. Idiot drivers need work, not roads!
