Extra security and police were on hand for the verdicts of three men accused of aggravated robbery in Tauranga District Court on Monday.

The jury found Wayne Jones and Clayton William Luke Kerr each guilty of two charges of aggravated robbery. In addition Kerr is also convicted of robbery and receiving stolen property.

The jury was unable to convict a third accused, Ethan Paul Hogarth, on two charges of aggravated robbery. He was freed from the court.

After Judge Christopher Harding dismissed the jury, Jones was reluctant to re-enter the dock for his conviction and remand.

'I'm not standing in the dock, I'll represent myself from now on,” Jones said.

'I suggest you go into the dock and we will resolve matters as quickly as we can,” replied Judge Harding.

Facing a ring of nine police, corrections staff, court security and additional security officers, Jones entered the dock, saying: 'I stand under duress”.

Both Jones and Kerr are remanded in custody until November 18.

The date is nominal because of the availability of counsel. Another date is expected to be arranged in the interim.

The judge publicly thanked the police, corrections, and court security team for ensuring matters went as smoothly as they did.

The charges related an incident on May 27, 2015, where a man had his BMW car and numerous personal items stolen in Tauranga.

Other charges related to the theft of two cellphones and jewellery from a woman on the same day.

In addition, Kerr is convicted of robbing another woman of a cell phone on July 22, 2015, and between May 6 and September 22, 2015, of receiving stolen property, personal items with a combined value of $5,000.

Judge Harding read out the three strikes rule concerning possible future convictions on crimes of violence to both men convicted on the above charges.
