Driver thankful after SH2 crash

'To know that people do care is really heartfelt.” These are the words from the driver of a ute involved in a serious crash on State Highway 2, Whakamarama.

Lyndsay Gallagher, 46, was on his way home from a trip to Farmlands in Te Puna when he smashed in to the driver's side door of a Honda Accord at 80km/h.

The car had been turning right from Barretts Road onto SH2 and pulled into the path of the ute, which had been heading north.

The impact of the crashed caused both vehicles to end up on the other side of the road.

'I hit him square in the door with the ute. My airbags deployed and you just sit their wondering what the hell just happened,” says Lyndsay.

'When the smoke had cleared, I looked down and saw the guy, and he was slumped down over the wheel, clearly unconscious.”

Lyndsay immediately thought he had killed the other driver.

'It's just a real awful feeling. I was just in a dazed and confused state. '

He says one young chap in a vest came over and obviously knew first aid because he didn't want to move the driver.

A passing ambulance, who was on the way to hospital with a drowning survivor, stopped to check on both Lyndsay and the other driver and opted to leave the man in his seat until another ambulance had arrived.

Firefighters had to cut the post and the door of the vehicle to free the driver.

'I was just sitting on the side of the road, wondering what the hell had just happened,” says Lyndsay.

'I had a bruised right hand, I was so lucky. The doctor at the hospital said you must be blessed because you have just been in a serious car crash and you walked away.”

The 54-year-old driver of the other vehicle sustained head, chest and rib injuries.

Lyndsay can't thank the people who helped in yesterday crash enough.

He says it's amazing to see the community come together and help other people out.

'Senior Constable Eric Busby, Tracy and Chris the ambulance officers and the firefighters. Man they do a lot of work at an accident. They just know what they're doing.

'Senior Constable Eric Busby came along and took charge, got his guys to get traffic moving.

'The local public, how they care, they get involved and stop traffic. The people who know their first aid, the Joe Blogs public that are doing this. To know that people do care is really heartfelt,” says Lyndsay.

'Thank you everyone that helped out yesterday.”

Police are still investigating the crash.

Issue a civil against the prat who pulled out on you - he deserves it. Pleased you came away from something which clearly wasn't your fault, with hardly any injury. Thanks to the guy who didn't think about his actions and caused rush hour mayhem because of that fact. Hope the Police lay charges.

Don't think we should overlook...

the sincerity in this by the writer, and hope no serious harm to those involved. It's unexpected "occurrences" such as this that should make us all grateful of the assistance given by both emergency services and 'on-hand" public. However, harsh as it may sound, yes I also hope charges are laid at an appropriate time for the driver at error. Such an intersection as this surely has at very least a "Give Way" sign, and we all need to do as such.Driver inattention and total loss of concentration has become a common occurrence now, we somehow need it back....

there have been a number of serious collisions at this corner, it is incredibly busy. It is a STOP sign on to SH2, so you are right, no excuse. I see insane driving behaviour there all the time, so it amazes me that there is not more carnage. We, all of us, need to drive assuming that every one on the road is an idiot and keeping our wits about us every moment we are driving. We also need to start research if people are on certain medication, if that changes their reflexes and ability to drive safely in which case, those medications should go on the same sort of system as alcohol and recreational drugs and you can't drive if you take them. when peoples lives depend on it, we need to do the studies and find out.

Thank goodness for airbags - should be compulsory in all vehicles - bet one driver is glad he had them.

is correct. Other people do make mistakes.

Accident

It is called an accident, the other driver did not do it 'on purpose'. Yes more attention is needed by a lot of drivers BUT everyone makes mistakes, you do not know how long he had been waiting, if he saw the Ute, if there was sun strike etc etc. It was an ACCIDENT and the ute drive was very thankful and humble. Please be kind with your comments, it COULD happen to you, someday. :(

it really seems that a LOT of people are making an awful lot of "mistakes" over the recent few years. I can and do understand this, but sadly has become "acceptable" as an outright excuse for many (not all) incidents such as this. The day we finally say something like "oh sorry I accidentally ran you over" or, sorry, I didn't mean to... .well, whatever.. but you are now seriously mamed or dead as a result...is a time to rethink surely?.. "sorry" means absolutely nothing now, except what someone would say if indeed they realise a "mistake" is made. Sadly it actually and realistically means nothing tangible at all. To make excuses such as "sunstrike" (etc etc..what is that?)...to answer your comments 1) "how long he had been waiting"..A: as long as it takes to manouvre safely 2)"if he saw the ute"...why wouldn't he, he was attentive?..yes?..3) "sunstrike"..JEEZ!!

I've complained to NZTA about the stop sing before. It has a round sign with an arrow on it facing SH2 at head height when your sitting in your car. This hampers your vision Looking towards TePuna so that you can't see oncoming traffic. You have to almost pull up over the limitline to get clear vision. However as usual nothing gets done. It's absolutely stupid to have the arrow where it ia on the pole. The arrow at Omokoroa is down low but keeps getting wiped out by trucks.
