Children critically injured in crash

UPDATED: Two toddlers are in a critical condition after being struck by vehicle on a 100km/h road the Bay of Plenty.

A woman was pushing a stroller with two children on board when all three pedestrians were struck by an SUV towing a trailer on Otamarakau Valley Road, Pukehina, around 2.30pm.

"The two children, an 11-month-old boy and a two-year-old girl, were flown to Waikato Hospital by helicopter," says a statement from police.

"They remain in critical condition."

A 33-year-old woman, who was pushing the stroller, has been transported to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.

"The driver of the SUV was not injured and is helping police with inquiries. The Serious Crash Unit are at the scene.

"Police's thoughts are with the families of those involved at this tragic time."

A section of Otamarakau Valley Road is closed after a woman and two children were struck by a vehicle this afternoon.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says an adult and two children are injured.

The vehicle involved is at the scene and Police are not looking for any other vehicle in relation to the accident.

'Otamarakau Valley Road in the vicinity of 295 is closed due to a serious crash, car versus three pedestrians. The road will be closed for some time.” Says Ian.

The scene is about three km in from SH2 at Otamarakau.
